Harvard and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The DOJ&#8217;s examination revealed that UCLA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >admissions process included race-related questions<\/a> and guidance for applicants on how to disclose their race, and that applicants of similar qualifications from different racial backgrounds were treated unequally, with black and Hispanic students favored. Harvard<em>, <\/em>which bans such practices<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The law school was also cited for violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said,\u00a0\u201cLike many of its peer institutions, UCLA Law School runs a two-tiered admissions system whose academic bar for acceptance shifts up or down depending on the color of your skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of race as a thumb on the scale that helps or disadvantages any student is illegal,\u201d she added. \u201cThe Department will continue to enforce equal treatment under the law everywhere \u2014 including in our nation\u2019s law schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ probe discovered that the institution\u2019s application included \u201cpersonal statements and essay prompts, which are designed to elicit information about race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also found that admissions staff told certain applicants \u201chow to reveal their race in these sections of the application,\u201d including during \u201crace-based recruitment efforts,\u201d such as an annual \u201cDiversity Admissions Open House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White and Asian applicants who had the same LSAT scores as black and Hispanic candidates were rejected in favor of the latter.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, combined admission stats from 2024 and 2025 showed that \u201chalf of the admitted black applicants had LSAT scores that were at or below 90 percent of the admitted white applicants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UCLA School of Law issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ucla-law-school-trump-discrimination-complaint-a88ce5730cef78f8458896bb757cddaf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> to the Associated Press which read, \u201cStudents are admitted through a comprehensive, merit-based review process that considers each applicant\u2019s achievements and experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident in our process,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department noted that UCLA receives federal funding and must abide by non-discrimination laws to keep receiving those funds, even threatening to sue the school if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department will continue to investigate their compliance with Title VI, as interpreted by SFFA\u2019s prohibition on race-conscious admissions,\u201d the release concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere a violation has been found, the Department will engage in settlement negotiations to ensure the school\u2019s admissions practices are brought into compliance.
