These messages include remarks about not tolerating \u201cbulls***,\u201d and a strong statement that he would have told Trump to \u201cf*** yourself\u201d if Trump had threatened him with a primary challenge. <\/p>\n<p>Tillis announced on June 29, 2025, that he would not seek re-election, citing disagreements with Trump over legislation, notably cuts to Medicaid. Trump publicly criticized Tillis post-announcement, claiming he was making a \u201cBIG MISTAKE for America,\u201d prompting Tillis to respond more bluntly in private texts. Despite denying any threats from Trump, Tillis\u2019s decision to retire came shortly after Trump\u2019s public remarks, leading some to interpret the timing as related. <\/p>\n<p>Tillis has also opposed Trump\u2019s picks for key federal positions and criticized him on issues like the Iran war, showcasing a pattern of dissent. Thom Tillis of North Carolina has made no secret of his fiery opposition to President Donald Trump, but in a bid to sell a new book, he\u2019s making some messages even more public.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/adamwren\/status\/2105978564168618397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico reporter Adam Wren<\/a>, Tillis sent expletive-laced text messages to Trump earlier this year that are set to be included in a book Tillis is releasing about his political career.<\/p>\n<p>The book is titled \u201cHow to Lose Friend and Antagonize Presidents,\u201d and the texts Tillis reportedly included to Trump are excellent examples of both.<\/p>\n<p>In one, Tillis reportedly wrote that he does not take \u201cbulls***\u201d \u2014 presumably including from the president. In another, according to Wren,\u00a0Tillis wrote that he would have told the president to \u201cf*** yourself\u201d had Trump threatened him with a primary challenger. But the president did make such a threat immediately before the senator announced he was not seeking re-election.<\/p>\n<p>Tillis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/24-hours-pushing-trump-far-thom-tillis-leaving-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on June 29, 2025, that he would not seek re-election after voting against the president\u2019s signature piece of legislation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rand-paul-reveals-one-thing-make-vote-yes-big-beautiful-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Big Beautiful Bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tillis joined fellow GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky, with the North Carolinian citing the cuts made to Medicaid, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theassemblync.com\/news\/politics\/tillis-trump-big-beautiful-bill-north-carolina-medicaid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Assembly<\/a>, a North Carolina-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theassemblync.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114764131885531801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted on social media<\/a> at the time, \u201cThom Tillis is making a BIG MISTAKE for America and the Wonderful People of North Carolina.\u201d In <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114764184133829613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another post<\/a>, Trump wrote that he is, \u201clooking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tillis announced he was not seeking re-election the following day, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/gop-sen-thom-tillis-not-running-re-election-north-carolina-rcna215819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The senator has been a frequent thorn in Trump\u2019s side since. This past spring he held up the president\u2019s nominee to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/breaking-trump-selects-prominent-federal-reserve-critic-replace-jerome-powell-chair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Powell<\/a> as Federal Reserve chairman, though he ultimately voted to confirm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/26\/tillis-confirm-warsh-fed-chair-00892345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Warsh<\/a> to the position.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the senator played hardball during the confirmation process of Todd Blanche as attorney general, pointing to a proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-doj-announces-1-776-billion-anti-weaponization-fund\/\" title=\"... DOJ announces .776 billion &#039;anti-weaponization&#039; fund\">anti-weaponization fund<\/a> that Trump backed for Jan. 6 defendants and others who believed the Biden Justice Department wrongfully targeted them.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/secure-ag-job-blanche-kills-off-anti-weaponization-fund-designed-compensate-victims-govt-witch-hunts-like-j6ers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-weaponization fund<\/a> was ultimately scrapped, and no payments were made.<\/p>\n<p>Tillis has criticized Trump in other matters like the Iran war, too. He reportedly wrote in a<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RedWavePress\/status\/2106065516515258377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> May 22 text<\/a> that, \u201cI still want to help but I don\u2019t take this bulls*** from anyone, including you Mr. President. Save that sh** for the cowards who don\u2019t care if you fail. I care if you fail and right now we are failing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/gop-senator-privately-told-off-trump-in-fiery-texts-obtained-by-politico-i-dont-take-that-bullsht-from-anyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mediaite<\/a>, that \u201cappeared to be a direct response to a  broadside Trump posted earlier that day, in which the president branded the Republican \u2018weak and ineffective,\u2019 a \u2018Nitpicker,\u2019 and a \u2018QUITTER.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IAPolls2022\/status\/2105967671099502866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 6 text<\/a> to Trump, Tillis countered the notion that the president\u2019s threat of backing a primary challenger is what caused him to not seek re-election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I have said before, you NEVER threatened me with a primary challenge. I get that you may have me confused with so many Republicans that you have threatened in the past, but NEVER me. If you had ever threatened me directly with a primary, I would have immediately told you to f*** yourself, and I would have announced my retirement immediately. Save those threats and head games for cowards and fools,\u201d the senator wrote.<\/p>\n<p>However, as noted above, the announcement that he was not seeking re-election came the day after Trump posted that he was \u201clooking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist\u2019s Sean Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/seanmdav\/status\/2106085265638850983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> on X in response to the June 6 text, \u201cThis is so cringey and pathetic that it almost makes me embarrassed for Tillis.
