Her execution attempt was highly controversial,with reports indicating she remained alive and loudly snoring during the procedures. One accomplice carved a pentagram on Slemmer\u2019s chest during the slaying.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: Tennessee governor puts a halt on executions after inmate Christa Gail Pike survives a lethal injection attempt. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gQgLmqTOf2\">https:\/\/t.co\/gQgLmqTOf2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Associated Press (@AP) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AP\/status\/2105528176004763840?\">October 1, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s attorneys had filed numerous motions objecting to the execution, the first on a woman in Tennessee in over 200 years.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/ahead-rare-execution-lone-woman-tennessee-death-row-says-peace-rcna600279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>, they said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/outrage-erupts-pro-clancy-juror-seems-forget-actual-kids-killed-denounces-jury-room-reenactment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the jury<\/a> in her original case was not informed of the sexual abuse and neglect she was subjected to during her upbringing.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court denied her final petitions on Tuesday evening, and Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, said he was upholding the sentence \u201cafter deliberate consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When an appeals court stopped the execution again an hour before it was supposed to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Supreme Court overturned that stay just hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Just before 6:30 p.m., witnesses were brought into the room where they would see Pike before the execution, where she told them, with what were to be her final words, that \u201cI\u2019m going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life \u2026 and that is with love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtains opened and closed several times during the execution attempt; reporters said \u201cthat they could hear breathing and steady snoring,\u201d the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>Then, at 9 p.m., reporters were told to leave, after which Tennessee officials held a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear what occurred at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on Wednesday evening that led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/convicted-cop-killer-suffers-excruciating-conscious-pain-botched-firing-squad-execution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">botched execution<\/a>. She was administered two doses of pentobarbital, a strong sedative.<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s lawyers said that their client had small veins, like another inmate involved in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-tennessee-readies-execution-man-working-implanted-defibrillator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">botched execution<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy,\u201d her lawyers said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case may be, Gov. Lee has ordered \u201ca comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred\u201d and has halted executions for the rest of this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2026\/09\/30\/botched-christa-pike-execution-governor-lee-review\/92033872007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Tennessean<\/a> reported that there was one other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-sees-biggest-day-executions-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">execution<\/a> scheduled for this year \u2014 Gary Wayne Sutton on Dec. 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State\u2019s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>The Tennessee Department of Correction, which is responsible for executions, insisted that it followed the state\u2019s guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State\u2019s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General\u2019s Office,\u201d a statement from department spokeswoman Dorinda Carter read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening. Christa Pike has been transported to an off-site medical facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of Thursday morning, Pike\u2019s condition was unclear.
