Gavin Newsom proudly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2026\/09\/29\/governor-newsom-signs-legislation-to-accelerate-wildfire-prevention-projects-strengthen-fire-response-and-harden-communities-against-future-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> that he had signed a set of bills to address the wildfire risk in California, making the state safer. The legislative package \u201csupports new tools to prevent and fight wildfires,\u201d the announcement said. Newsom signed the bills in the presence of firefighters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you actually read the announcement, you\u2019ll notice that the description of the bills trends toward vagueness: \u201cSB 1153 by Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced) \u2014 Disaster preparedness: urban retail water suppliers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/epa-decides-not-to-regulate-chemical-linked-to-fetal-brain-damage-in-drinking-water\/\" title=\"EPA Decides Not to Regulate Chemical Linked to Fetal Brain Damage in Drinking ...\">public water systems<\/a>: wildfire.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1350306822\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Newsom <em>supports new tools to prevent and fight wildfires<\/em> by signing \u2026<em> something<\/em> that involves water systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB1153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">go read SB 1153 yourself<\/a>. As residents of the burned-out community of Pacific Palisades sue the City of Los Angeles and the state of California over the fire that destroyed their community, the bill that Newsom signed supports tools against wildfires by releasing public water systems from liability for wildfires:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither the failure of an urban retail water supplier to implement or comply with any actions identified in subdivision (a) nor the inability of any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-approves-first-of-its-kind-microplastics-testing-in-drinking-water\/\" title=\"California Approves First-Of-Its-Kind Microplastics Testing In Drinking ...\">public water system<\/a> to maintain water supply or water pressure during a wildfire shall be considered a substantial cause of the damages resulting from a wildfire.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See, Californians are safer from wildfire, now, because they can\u2019t sue if there isn\u2019t any water to fight it.  Thank your governor for having the courage to sign this important new wildfire protection into law, Californians. He made a point of putting out a press release to brag about signing this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, who lost his home in the Palisades fire, has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/spencerpratt\/status\/2105323786052485316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented on<\/a> the bill, but you\u2019ll want to avoid clicking on that link if you don\u2019t like to read profanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While hydrants often can\u2019t keep up with the demand for water in a major wildfire, Palisades residents are arguing in court that an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/california-wildfires\/more-pacific-palisades-residents-join-lawsuit-against-ladwp-city-over-water-supply-failure\/3649420\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">empty city reservoir<\/a> in the neighborhood deprived firefighters of a source of water. The documentary filmmaker Gabriel Mann, whose projects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotshotmovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focus on wildfire<\/a> and wildland firefighting, has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Hotshot_Movie\/status\/2004170496233873508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed<\/a> with the argument. The reservoir, he wrote, \u201chas a Helispot. Since it was offline, the copters \u2014 which were the first resources on scene \u2014 had to fly miles away to reload, delaying their initial attack at the most critical time: when the fire was still small and manageable. Because that Helispot was offline, copters spent over 6 additional hours <em>outside<\/em> the fire zone to find water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But California is safe from wildfire now, because you can\u2019t say that in court anymore. Good job, Gavin.
