It is being brought to the floor at a time when a record number of voters say government corruption is \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/713933\/record-high-say-government-corruption-widespread.aspx\">widespread<\/a>\u201d \u2014 and that they <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3968\">trust Democrats more<\/a> to address the issue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, the bill allows members to keep their current portfolio and leaves officials in the executive branch untouched. It also includes language on voter ID borrowed from the SAVE America Act. The bill only received the support of 13 House Democrats when it passed the chamber earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth pieces of legislation strike at the very heart of issues that the American people care deeply about, passionately about, and we\u2019ll see if the Democrats are willing to take \u2018yes\u2019 for an answer,\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), in turn, called the data center legislation a \u201ctoothless messaging bill\u201d and said the stock trading measure was \u201cbuilt to fail\u201d due to its voter ID provision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe bill is just another desperate Republican attempt to pretend they\u2019re fighting corruption when what they really want is to score political points,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schumer is expected to be joined by the overwhelming majority of Democrats in voting to oppose the legislation, which will be considered alongside a vote on President Donald Trump\u2019s nominee for labor secretary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rhetorical sniping comes as both men wait to see which party wins control of the Senate in November and whether they will lead their conferences in the majority or not. Negotiations on both fell apart earlier this month but could still be revived in the lame duck session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been moments of bipartisan success in recent weeks. The Senate just finished passing a bill regulating college sports and honored the late Sen. Lindsey Graham with a new Russia sanctions package last month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the collapse of other priorities has left rank-and-file Republicans clamoring for votes they can cut into campaign ads and use to rebut Democratic attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A vote on the Ratepayer Protection Act is particularly helpful for Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH), a vulnerable incumbent who has been pummeled over the issue relentlessly by his Democratic opponent, former Sen. Sherrod Brown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Husted called his legislation the only data center bill that can become law and noted it passed the House 417-3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not looking for a win for me,\u201d he said of Democratic skepticism in the Senate. \u201cI\u2019m looking for a win for the American people. They have a chance to give that to them. It\u2019s just a question of whether or not they\u2019re going to choose to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stock trading bill similarly helps Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE), who is running for his first full term in Nebraska, a red state where independent Dan Osborn is mounting a competitive challenge for the second cycle in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ricketts is the cosponsor of the Senate version of the bill that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4659212\/house-passes-gop-stock-trade-ban\/\">passed the House<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4743718\/gop-ken-paxton-rescue-mission-100-million-texas\/\"><strong>THE GOP\u2019S KEN PAXTON RESCUE MISSION TOPS $100 MILLION IN TEXAS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Left off the Senate calendar is a bill from Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) that would cap the price of insulin at $35 for certain consumers. Thune told reporters Monday that he\u2019s heard repeatedly from her on the legislation, but that he wasn\u2019t sure \u201cwhat the traffic will bear for the duration of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the executive level, Trump is contemplating his own actions to address affordability, including a ban on diesel exports, which has prompted fierce pushback from the oil and gas industry.
