This incident is part of a broader pattern where largely small-dollar political donors are targeted, raising concerns about government overreach and a chilling effect on free speech. Past parallels include the IRS targeting conservative groups during the Obama era and recent efforts by Democratic-led states like new Jersey and Arizona to uncover and threaten donors, often without sufficient evidence of misconduct. Legal battles, such as in arizona, challenge these measures, asserting that forced disclosure infringes on constitutional rights and fosters harassment. Critics argue these tactics discourage political participation and are part of a broader strategy to intimidate supporters, highlighting ongoing conflicts over privacy, free speech, and partisan overreach in political activism.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An Iowan donated $10 to President Donald Trump months before the 2020 election. As a result, then-Special Counsel Jack Smith obtained his home address, bank information, and other personal information and handed it over to the Biden administration\u2019s FBI and DOJ, Sen. Chuck Grassley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChuckGrassley\/status\/2104941423791407106?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a> on X. The donor was one of nearly 5,000 Americans who had personal checks and information snatched up by Jack Smith\u2019s team, according to Grassley.<\/p>\n<p>The Iowan from Osage targeted for his minute political donation is a symptom of a \u201crunaway Democrat gov[ernmen]t,\u201d as Grassley put it. <\/p>\n<p>But it seems <em>anytime<\/em> Democrats get power, they run away with it. And it\u2019s not just that this Iowan who made the $10 donation may now think twice before making a political donation; it\u2019s that others will <em>also<\/em> think twice before giving. It has, as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KatiePavlich\/status\/2104998710060953920?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katie Pavlich<\/a> pointed out on X, a chilling effect on speech and recalls the IRS\u2019s targeting of the Tea Party, New Jersey\u2019s demands for donor records from pro-life pregnancy, and Arizona\u2019s current attempt to doxx political donors. In each case, the message was clear: Supporting the wrong political cause may cost you in more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley, who is Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/29\/jack-smith-seized-nearly-5000-checks-written-by-trump-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a> whistleblower disclosures Tuesday that claim that Smith and his team \u201cacquired at least 4,782 checks from Americans who made mainly small-dollar donations to President Trump between September 2019 to August 2023.\u201d The checks, which Smith reportedly obtained via a subpoena, included bank account and routing numbers, signatures, and home addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Such lawfare is reminiscent of the IRS scandal under the Obama administration. Lois Lerner, then the director of Exempt Organizations, oversaw staff screening applications for terms such as \u201cTea Party,\u201d \u201cPatriot,\u201d and the like. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2013\/05\/10\/irs-apology-conservative-groups-2012-election\/2149939\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IRS admitted<\/a> to targeting conservative groups because they had the wrong political opinions. Lerner <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/10\/23\/doj-lois-lerner-wont-get-charged-for-targeting-conservative-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was ultimately<\/a> not prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS targeting conservatives under Democrat leadership should have been a watershed moment that resulted in a curtailing of government overreach. But it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist\u2019s Jordan Boyd <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/29\/scotus-confirms-first-amendment-protects-pregnancy-center-donors-from-nosey-abortion-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, New Jersey\u2019s Democrat-run government targeted First Choice Women\u2019s Resource Centers in 2023 \u201cover seemingly baseless concerns that it was misleading its donors and misrepresenting its services.\u201d The investigation resulted in then-Attorney General Matthew Platkin issuing a subpoena to try and \u201cstrong-arm the nonprofit into doxxing its donors and forfeiting information to a state with a strong abortion activism agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as the Supreme Court ruled this past April,\u00a0the New Jersey Division of Affairs and the Attorney General\u2019s Office couldn\u2019t produce evidence of complaints against First Choice for allegedly defrauding, misleading, or deceiving any donors. Yet Platkin subpoenaed the pregnancy center and \u201cdemanded it \u2018disclose documents reflecting the names, phone numbers, addresses, and places of employment of all individuals\u2019 who donated to the nonprofit outside of First Choice\u2019s webpage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Subpoenas aren\u2019t the only Democrat strategy to get donors\u2019 identities, however, as demonstrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/campaign-legal-center-clc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arizona\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/campaignlegal.org\/story\/arizonas-proposition-211-and-fight-voters-right-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leftist<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopdarkmoney.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backed <\/a>Proposition 211. The measure requires nonprofits that <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Arizona_Proposition_211,_Campaign_Finance_Sources_Disclosure_Initiative_(2022)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spend more<\/a> than $50,000 on statewide media campaigns to disclose where donations greater than $5,000 come from. The Arizona Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the law in June of 2026 but did greenlight part of the challenge brought by the Center for Arizona Policy and the Arizona Free Enterprise Club, along with anonymous donors who say the disclosure would lead to harassment.<\/p>\n<p>As Ryan Mills of the Goldwater Institute said in a statement, \u201cEveryone has the right to support causes they believe in without fear of harassment, retaliation, or being canceled.\u201d Mills further stated that the case will allow the plaintiffs to \u201cprove that compelled disclosure chills speech in violation of the Arizona Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important victory for every Arizonan who believes people should be free to support the causes they care about without fear of government-compelled disclosure,\u201d said\u00a0Scott Freeman, senior attorney at the Goldwater Institute. \u201cThe Arizona Supreme Court recognized that our state constitution independently protects free speech and that citizens are entitled to prove that compelled donor disclosure violates those protections.\u201d The Goldwater Institute represented the plaintiffs in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Americans considering donating $10, $1,000, or $10,000 to political causes they agree with should not have to fear that they will be doxxed or end up on a government list. But each time targeting and doxxing does happen, it makes ordinary citizens consider staying out of politics all together.
