The Department of Agriculture\u2019s daily slaughter <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/esmis.nal.usda.gov\/publication\/daily-livestock-slaughter\">report<\/a> showed 17,000 fewer head of cattle were processed on Sept. 24 than a week earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Groups that represent workers in hospitality, restaurant, and agriculture industries have previously called for the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/trump-administration\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"339\">Trump administration<\/a> to prevent ICE from arresting workers without legal status, but they have gone on to predict economic downfall that would ensue nationwide if the country is purged of that workforce.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 2 union represents 2,500 members in Dodge City, Kansas. The union said in a statement that \u201cICE\u2019s targeting of these communities sows fear, instability, and chaos into the lives of those trying to make a living and feed our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kansas Livestock Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen\u2019s Association, and Texas Cattle Feeders Association echoed those concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese ICE operations are having a massive chilling effect on the legal, documented, skilled workers that put beef on the table and keep the cattle supply chain moving,\u201d the trio of livestock organizations said in a joint <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kla.org\/news-center\/news-releases\/news\/details\/51102\/media-statement-from-the-kansas-livestock-association-oklahoma-cattlemens-association-and-texas-catt\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration has touted its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/deportation\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1294\">deportation<\/a> push as a way to remove illegal immigrants from the U.S. workforce and increase wages by opening new jobs to Americans and legal immigrants. Illegal workers appeal to businesses because they are often willing to work under the table at a lower rate of pay than American workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one example that backs up the White House\u2019s claim, in the days after ICE arrested dozens of illegal workers at a Nebraska meatpacking plant last June, NBC News <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/omaha-immigration-workplace-raid-aftermath-rcna212931\">reported<\/a> that every seat in the facility\u2019s waiting room was occupied by legal workers who wanted to apply for jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As many as 8.5 million illegal immigrants are in the U.S. workforce, according to the Center for Migration Studies of New York, a think tank and educational organization that studies international migration.
