Shontel Brown claimed that there has been a rise in lynching-like deaths among Black Americans,urging investigations into what she called a modern lynching crisis. Though, evidence does not support this claim, as most cases labeled as lynchings have been ruled suicides or natural deaths, with only one actively being investigated as homicide. Critics, including Dean Cain, argue that Brown\u2019s assertions are exaggerated or false. Similar past false alarms include the Jussie Smollett hoax, the Bubba Wallace noose incident, and staged hate crimes. Data shows most violent crimes against both white and Black victims are committed by individuals of the same race, indicating crime is largely about proximity, not race warfare.Historically, the Ku Klux Klan was formed by Confederate veterans to intimidate Black voters, and Southern Democrats played a significant role in blocking civil rights legislation. Many prominent figures from that era, including senators and Supreme Court justices, had ties to the klan. The piece emphasizes that judging people by character, not race, is the true American ideal, and facts should prevail over false narratives or political talking points.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Rep. Shontel Brown looked into her phone camera earlier this month and told the country that black Americans are being lynched at an alarming rate. \u201cIn the last year, there\u2019s been an alarming increase in Black Americans found dead hanging from trees,\u201d the Ohio Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepShontelBrown\/status\/2099244034900312504?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe know what that has meant throughout our history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d also joined Rep. Ayanna Pressley and <a href=\"https:\/\/pressley.house.gov\/2026\/09\/10\/breaking-pressley-leads-nearly-60-lawmakers-demanding-investigation-into-black-people-found-hanging-invokes-legacy-of-lynching-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">58 House colleagues<\/a> in a letter demanding the Department of Justice and FBI investigate what Pressley called a \u201cnational crisis\u201d of modern-day lynching.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the problem: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenerdstash.com\/most-were-ruled-suicides-ohio-rep-shontel-brown-joins-pressley-in-demand-for-federal-lynching-probe-sparks-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">There\u2019s no evidence behind the claim<\/a>. A 21-year-old found in a Georgia park: effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cobbcounty.gov\/news\/statement-investigation-death-kyle-bassinga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> a suicide, with no evidence anyone else was present. A Delta State University student in Mississippi: <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/autopsy-results-expected-death-black-delta-state-student\/story?id=125661797\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suicide<\/a>. A 16-year-old in Charlotte: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/07\/31\/community-relations-committee-questions-cmpds-investigation-into-death-16-year-old-found-hanging-charlotte-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suicide<\/a>, according to police. <\/p>\n<p>One case in Kentucky remains an open homicide investigation, and it deserves one. But one confirmed homicide under investigation is not a national crisis of racial terror. Local law enforcement has <a href=\"https:\/\/13wham.com\/news\/nation-world\/mississippi-womans-hanging-was-staged-after-murder-during-drug-dispute-detective-says-tasia-fortune-hanged-dead-killing-homicide-investigation-jackson-police-department-race-racist-true-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the homicide is drug-related and the hanging was \u201cstaged;\u201d moreover, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2026\/09\/23\/police-make-2nd-arrest-death-black-woman-found-hanging-tree-authorities-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspects<\/a> in custody are both black. As actor Dean Cain, who played Superman on 1990s television, bluntly pointed out: Brown is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dem-ripped-online-inventing-racism-lawmakers-peddle-debunked-lynching-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inventing racism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time Democrats and the media have manufactured a lynching panic where none existed. In 2021 a jury convicted Jussie Smollett of five counts of disorderly conduct for paying two men $3,500 to fake a hate crime in Chicago, complete with a rope around his neck \u2014 a verdict the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/court-overturns-jussie-smolletts-conviction-on-charges-he-staged-attack-on-himself\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Illinois Supreme Court later threw out<\/a> in 2024 on a narrow double jeopardy question, not because it found the underlying facts in doubt.<\/p>\n<p>NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace\u2019s garage stall turned out to have a pull rope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/23\/us\/nascar-noose-not-hate-crime-bubba-wallace\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tied like a noose since before his team was ever assigned that garage<\/a>, a fact the FBI confirmed after reviewing video nobody bothered to check before the story went national. In 2023, three people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-co\/pr\/colorado-springs-man-sentenced-46-months-after-being-convicted-charges-arising-hate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">staged a cross burning<\/a> in front of a black mayoral candidate\u2019s campaign sign in Colorado Springs and emailed the footage to news outlets, and got federal convictions for it. A <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/university-la-verne-hate-crime-hoax-arrest-anayeli-pena-student-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of La Verne student<\/a> allegedly manufactured a slew of racist threats against herself and her own student group, canceling classes, before police traced the messages back to her.<\/p>\n<p>And 17 years after Duke lacrosse players David Evans, Collin Finnerty, and Reade Seligmann were declared innocent, their accuser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/14\/us\/crystal-mangum-duke-lacrosse-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publicly confessed<\/a> in 2024 that she\u2019d made the whole thing up. Add Tawana Brawley from 1987, whose case is worth a second look: A grand jury found her rape claim was a hoax, Al Sharpton accused a real prosecutor of being one of the attackers, and a jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/1998\/07\/30\/1025090\/pagones-to-be-paid-350-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found Sharpton liable for defamation<\/a>, ordering him to pay part of a $345,000 judgment he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwno.org\/2013-08-05\/15-years-later-tawana-brawley-has-paid-1-percent-of-penalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">settled<\/a> with donations from supporters. That\u2019s the business model, and it\u2019s almost 40 years old now.<\/p>\n<p>As lucrative as that model is for race hucksters, it isn\u2019t supported by the data. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/library\/publications\/criminal-victimization-2020-supplemental-statistical-tables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bureau of Justice Statistics figures<\/a>, 69 percent of violent incidents against white victims and 66 percent against black victims \u201cwere committed by an offender of the same race or ethnicity.\u201d FBI data on <a href=\"https:\/\/ucr.fbi.gov\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2019\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019\/topic-pages\/tables\/expanded-homicide-data-table-6.xls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single-victim, single-offender murders<\/a> found roughly 79 percent of white homicide victims were killed by white offenders, and roughly 89 percent of black homicide victims were killed by black offenders. Crime in this country is mostly a story about proximity, opportunity, and circumstance, not a story about race war.<\/p>\n<p>Since Brown wants to invoke \u201cour history,\u201d let\u2019s be precise about it. The Klan that terrorized Reconstruction was <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopediavirginia.org\/entries\/ku-klux-klan-in-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founded by Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee<\/a>, and by the late 1860s it functioned, in historian Eric Foner\u2019s words, as a paramilitary \u201cforce serving the interests of the [white Southern] Democratic Party,\u201d intimidating black voters and Republican officeholders to restore Democrat control of the South. <\/p>\n<p>A century later, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed the Senate 73-27 and the House 289-126 only after a filibuster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/link\/crec\/166\/h\/5036\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led largely by Southern Democrats<\/a>, including West Virginia\u2019s Robert Byrd, a former Klan recruiter who went on to serve in the Senate for another 46 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/legalclarity.org\/civil-rights-act-of-1964-vote-breakdown-house-and-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republicans backed the bill by a wider margin than Democrats did in both chambers<\/a>, and the opposition that remained came almost entirely from the Southern Democrat bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, another Alabama Democrat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/kkk-supreme-court-hugo-black-fdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent two years as a card-carrying Klansman<\/a> before FDR put him on the bench. If you\u2019re going to swing \u201cour history\u201d around as a cudgel against people who are ruling on evidence, you don\u2019t get to leave out the chapters where your own party wrote most of it.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther King asked the country to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/social-media\/transcripts\/transcript-march-pt3-of-3-2602934.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">judge people \u201cby the content of their character<\/a>,\u201d not \u201cthe color of their skin,\u201d and by any honest measure, that standard applies just as much to the people making an accusation as to the people accused.
