Sure, it wasn\u2019t on the same level as the Grammys or Oscars, but these shows were seen as their quirky, edgy, less-famous relative. Like the Chris Penn to Sean Penn, or the USFL to the NFL. (Don\u2019t tell The Donald I mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vWxMCLHXkVc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that league<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>MTV was never terribly good, and yet Gen X\u2019ers and older Millennials will talk about it like Baby Boomer Democrats trying to tell their kids about Kennedy Camelot to explain why a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/horrific-jew-blood-semen-comments-return-haunt-jfks-grandson-launches-campaign-replace-jerry-nadler-best-dems-can\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dimwit anti-Semite<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nevertrumper-george-conway-flames-dem-finishes-ny-house-primary-behind-unknown-usaid-hack-unstable-kennedy-kid-two-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believes a congressional seat is his birthright<\/a> is a Big Deal to them.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure why we ever thought it was so rad, to use the parlance of those times, but maybe it was just by comparison. Because I was surprised to discover on Sunday that 1) MTV still exists, 2) the VMAs still exist, and 3) goodness, they seem awful even by the standards of the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>The evening was best summed up by Madonna when she accepted the award for \u201cBest Dance\u201d \u2014 which, considering the 68-year-old Madonna was mostly washed up by the time I was old enough to start caring about music that wasn\u2019t \u201cWeird\u201d Al Yankovic, is proof that the VMAs should be taken out of their misery like Ol\u2019 Yeller.<\/p>\n<p>Her <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vmas\/status\/2104392741350514753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speech<\/a> \u2014 in which she either does a very good impersonation of an inebriated person or is indeed very inebriated \u2014 began thusly: \u201cFirst of all, I want to get this thing out of my [butt]. It\u2019s been there all night.\u201d She then struggles to get a mic cord out of her posterior, then admits, \u201cI\u2019m kind of unclear as to what this award is for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You and me both, but given that Madonna is someone who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DXQesyxDTfP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mocked<\/a> Courtney Love for her substance abuse during an infamous VMAs interview over 30 years ago now, it\u2019s impressive that Love is <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/story\/the-best-and-worst-of-the-2026-mtv-vmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sober<\/a>, sane, and still with us.<\/p>\n<p>Madonna is alive, sure \u2014 even if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/madonna-posts-new-photo-referencing-surgery-called-alien-freak-grammys-look-cute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">majority of her body<\/a> is probably younger than the 68 years she\u2019s been physically present on this earth, at this point \u2014 but it\u2019s clear her mind has gone beyond that great dancefloor in the sky, at this point.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Love and her late husband, we might as well get to the highlights of the evening, which mostly involved living people paying tribute to dead people. But I have no proof that the guy lip-synced it, to be fair.<\/p>\n<p>During a raunchy performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, Madonna actually proved she was doing so or performed some sort of miracle whereby she didn\u2019t actually sing:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Madonna singing without moving her mouth!?? \ud83d\ude2d\ud83d\ude2d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/VMAS?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VMAS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uKVHB8P6GZ\">pic.twitter.com\/uKVHB8P6GZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nick | \u2764\ufe0f\u2764\ufe0f (@EnjoyMissJanet) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EnjoyMissJanet\/status\/2104372332378607943?\">September 28, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and I almost forgot about the host: Snoop Dogg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/olympics-picked-former-pimp-bus-full-bes-honored-torchbearer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an admitted sex trafficker<\/a> and one-time accused murderer who is now so family friendly he literally voiced a cat in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5779228\/characters\/nm0004879\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Garfield Movie<\/a>.\u201d I\u2019m assuming that cat didn\u2019t have any lines about smoking a fat blunt or prostituting women, but even though my kids wanted to see that filmic conflagration, I managed to \u2014 unlike at least one guy who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aetv.com\/articles\/snoop-dogg-murder-trial-celebrity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crossed Snoop\u2019s path<\/a> \u2014 dodge that bullet, so I couldn\u2019t tell you for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Like Madonna, Snoop D-O-double-G is much closer to the double-A-R-P than his glory days in music \u2014 although, unlike the Queen of Pop, at least Snoop has something other than recreational plastic surgery to fall back on.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, he had to wait to ply that trade, as the show was delayed. It turns out that, since the shindig was being televised on MTV, CBS, and streaming service Paramount+, MTV had to wait until the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys game ran over its allotted time due to a furious Ravens comeback, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/entertainment\/17065497\/vmas-delayed-off-air-cbs-football\/?utm_medium=Social&#038;utm_campaign=sunustwitter&#038;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1790553057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sun<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve learned their lesson from the \u201cHeidi\u201d game, a reference only slightly older than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-madonna-pulls-joe-biden-calls-wheelchair-bound-fan-sitting-concert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madonna\u2019s<\/a> career.<\/p>\n<p>And \u201cHeidi\u201d was actually good! If it\u2019s on broadcast TV and it involves MTV \u2014 which is a nostalgia brand at this juncture, especially when it comes to actual music \u2014 it\u2019s pretty clear that <em>I am<\/em> who they\u2019re going for, especially when the host is Snoop Dogg and the biggest name at the awards not married to Travis Kelce was Madonna.<\/p>\n<p>Even Taylor Swift is creatively at her first career low, in terms of her musical output, and save for an unexpected renaissance, it\u2019s pretty clear Mars\u2019 best days are well behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, in this era of permanent nostalgia farming, neither will become irrelevant, lest I or my fellow oldsters ever have to listen to a whole Sombr song of his own authorship. But the TV audience had the same thoughts I did.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/tvshowbiz\/article-16165463\/vma-2026-viewers-organizers-awards-cancel-boycott.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.K. Daily Mail<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Many former fans took to X to  their concern about the \u2018boring\u2019 event, adding that they struggled to see a future for it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Getting the feeling this might be the last VMAs,\u2019 one viewer wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018There\u2019s no shame in bowing out gracefully. (Even a diehard liberal will concur that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pop-superstar-gwen-stefani-shakes-internet-quotes-john-316-celebrates-birth-lord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gavin Rossdale\u2019s<\/a> Bush is still worse than either George H.W. or George W.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, as for Madonna, what can we say? During her 1995 catfight with Courtney Love, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/madonnas-disturbing-anti-gun-god-control-video-backfires-shooting-survivor-condemns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madonna<\/a> was inching her way toward irrelevancy. When she was last on the VMAs in 2003, which featured her infamous kiss with Britney Spears, she was definitely irrelevant. Now, in 2023, she\u2019s not just irrelevant, she\u2019s reached Full Retirement Age for Social Security.<\/p>\n<p>And the No. 1 act Sunday night, as voted on by both the industry mavens at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/vmas-performances-ranked-2026\/madonna-sabrina-carpenter-charli-xcx-bring-your-love-danceteria-afterhours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billboard<\/a> and the wannabe indie-kids at <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/story\/the-best-and-worst-of-the-2026-mtv-vmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pitchfork<\/a>? Madonna.
