I\u2019m grateful that you do that. I mean, there are certain people who occupy certain offices that are too cowardly to take your questions,\u201d the smarmy public health bureaucrat and failed former candidate for governor added in a not-so-subtle jab at the president. <\/p>\n<p>He was more direct in another exchange with the media, asserting that \u201cTrump hates the idea of democracy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why he denies elections and is interfering with the freedom of the press,\u201d El-Sayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadlinedetroit.com\/articles\/35090\/michigan_u_s_senate_candidates_weigh_in_on_trump_s_ban_on_3_media_outlets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Deadline Detroit. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an interesting criticism from a guy who reportedly once urged the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Muslim Brotherhood<\/a> to \u201cpurge\u201d news outlets and law enforcement in Egypt. The Trump administration has designated the Muslim Brotherhood a <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terrorist organization.<\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>\u201cPurge the Media\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>As The Washington Free Beacon <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/abdul-el-sayed-called-on-egypts-muslim-brotherhood-to-purge-the-media-and-police-shortly-before-islamic-government-arrested-reporters-for-insulting-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on Wednesday, the \u201cdemand was made in an Arabic-language statement on Al-Ahram Gate, an Egyptian news portal.\u201d It was signed by 46 \u201cleaders of the Egyptian community\u201d living in the U.S., \u201cone of whom was El-Sayed, who was born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, leaders of the Egyptian community, support the revolutionary decisions taken by the president, and we call on him to purge the media and the police as quickly as possible,\u201d states the letter published in 2012 after Islamist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/profile-egypts-new-president-mohamed-morsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mohamed Morsi,<\/a> who was Egypt\u2019s president at the time, grabbed sweeping powers to quell growing unrest. <\/p>\n<p>Laura Loomer first <a href=\"https:\/\/loomered.com\/2026\/04\/09\/exclusive-islamic-michigan-senate-candidate-abdul-el-sayed-penned-op-ed-backing-muslim-brotherhood-takeover-in-egypt-and-signed-pledge-supporting-its-leader-mohamed-morsi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on the declaration in April. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Abdul El-Sayed signed on to an Arabic-language statement in 2012 demanding that the Muslim Brotherhood \u201cpurge\u201d media and police in Egypt. <\/p>\n<p>The repressive Islamic group carried out a brutal religious crackdown on the press soon thereafter, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LevineJonathan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LevineJonathan<\/a> reports. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LMHTzBfGua\">pic.twitter.com\/LMHTzBfGua<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Washington Free Beacon (@FreeBeacon) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FreeBeacon\/status\/2102752776103104638?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Free Beacon noted that the letter <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/276648.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remains online<\/a>, but the link appears to have been removed. As of late Wednesday, the link produced an error message. Loomer, however, included the letter in her original post. <\/p>\n<p>It appears the signers of the declaration got their wish. Morsi and his \u201cbrothers\u201d cracked down on critics, harassing and suppressing journalists. Some stood trial, others were attacked in the street, according to media accounts at the time. Some were targeted for the crime of \u201cinsulting Islam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a troubling backward step that Egypt\u2019s newly elected President Mohamed Morsi should not be taking,\u201d Robert Mahoney, Deputy Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2012\/08\/egyptian-government-attempts-to-suppress-the-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in an Aug. 16, 2012 report. \u201cWe urge President Morsi to reverse this course immediately and demonstrate his commitment to press freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed wrote in support of the Muslim Brotherhood before the group rode Morsi to power.\u00a0 In a HuffPost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/why-the-us-should-support_b_816037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">op-ed<\/a> amid the mass protests of the so-called Egyptian Spring, the Islamist argued that the U.S. had nothing to fear from the group that would ultimately be designated a terrorist group by the U.S.<\/p>\n<h2>Obama Wasn\u2019t \u2018Losing a Lot of Sleep\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Revoking the White House press credentials of three propaganda-pushing corporate media outlets is hardly the journalism \u201cpurge\u201d that El-Sayed signed on to. In the first place, MS Now, CNN, and Politico have the right of redress. They are exercising it, almost immediately filing a lawsuit on First Amendment grounds. Egyptian journalists didn\u2019t enjoy the same protection then \u2014 or now. <\/p>\n<p>In a court filing, the Department of Justice alleges that MS Now, CNN, and Politico \u201cfailed to maintain basic minimum \u2018standards of professionalism and decorum expected of those given access to the White House Complex,\u2019\u201d including \u201cpublishing sensitive or classified information.\u201d In asking a D.C. court to deny the corporate outlets\u2019 motion seeking to enjoin the revocations, the DOJ argues that Trump\u2019s actions weren\u2019t retaliatory \u201cbecause the government would have taken the same action anyway, notwithstanding Plaintiffs\u2019 speech criticizing the President \u2014 indeed, the President has not revoked access to other outlets that have equally criticized the President.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump also is not the first U.S. president to take news organizations to task for what they believed to be naked bias and lies. <\/p>\n<p>Former President Barrack Obama and his administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/commentary\/roll-back-the-muslim-brotherhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warmly embraced<\/a> the Muslim Brotherhood. This week, Obama, with a case of the vapors, said his \u201cimagination could not foresee some of the stuff that is going on right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to think what would have happened if I had said, you know what, Fox News, you\u2019re out of here! It\u2019s unimaginable!\u201d said the president who led the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/videos\/hemingway-obama-destroyed-rule-of-law-with-horrific-russiagate-coup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russiagate soft coup<\/a> against an incoming administration. He made his remarks during a discussion at Colgate University. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former President Barack Obama on President Trump&#8217;s White House press ban: &#8220;I\u2019m trying to think what would have happened if I had said, you know what, Fox News, you\u2019re out of here! It\u2019s unimaginable!&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R1pmoVasEz\">pic.twitter.com\/R1pmoVasEz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CSPAN (@cspan) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/2101478144314085449?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 20, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p> As The New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/20\/us-news\/obama-glosses-over-his-own-attempt-to-block-media-from-white-house-as-he-slams-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, Obama\u2019s handlers tried to block Fox News\u2019 pool reporters from interviewing an administration official. His White House comms director declared the network was \u201cthe source and the outlet for Republican Party talking points,\u201d Obama told his friends at NBC News that he wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/obama-compares-fox-news-to-talk-radio-says-hes-not-losing-sleep-over-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201closing a lot of sleep\u201d<\/a> over the move to block Fox. His Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2026\/09\/white-house-access-is-a-privilege-not-a-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spied on<\/a> journalists, for crying out loud. <\/p>\n<p>Obama\u2019s water carriers, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, protested the White House move \u2014 as Fox is doing with Trump\u2019s ban. As The Post understandably notes, the Biden administration \u201calso <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/08\/white-house-bans-new-york-post-from-biden-event-as-hunter-indictment-looms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly cut the New York Post<\/a> out of access to various events and targeted other conservative outlets at times as well.\u201d Joe Biden and his Big Tech pals teamed up to censor The Federalist and The Daily Wire in \u201cone of the most audacious, manipulative, secretive, and gravest abuses of power and infringements of First Amendment rights by the federal government in American history,\u201d according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/%E2%80%9Cone%20of%20the%20most%20audacious,%20manipulative,%20secretive,%20and%20gravest%20abuses%20of%20power%20and%20infringements%20of%20First%20Amendment%20rights%20by%20the%20federal%20government%20in%20American%20history.%E2%80%9D\">lawsuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Selective Outrage<\/h2>\n<p>After years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/hundreds-of-newspapers-defend-press-freedom-against-president-trumps-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cresistance-style\u201d<\/a> narrative spinning on a duly-elected president \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/russia-collusion-hoax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russia collusion hoax,<\/a> covering for a cognitively compromised Biden and his morally bankrupt son, and fanning the flames of Trump Derangement Syndrome \u2014 the accomplice media have shown themselves to be more than irresponsible.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us back to El-Sayed and his support for cracking down on journalists critical to the Muslim Brotherhood regime that briefly controlled Egypt. <\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t find much reporting about that 2012 letter from the usual suspects in the \u201cresistance press, despite El-Sayed\u2019s criticisms of Trump this week. They\u2019re not all that interested, it seems, in recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/melissabrodsky\/posts\/egyptian-journalists-are-sounding-alarms-about-abdul-el-sayed-michigans-democrat\/10163933295548717\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> that \u201cEgyptian journalists are sounding alarms about Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan\u2019s Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If anything, news organizations have peddled faulty \u201cfactchecks\u201d insisting that there\u2019s nothing to see here. A Sept. 3 headline in Bridge Michigan declares, \u201cNo evidence Abdul El-Sayed \u2018pledged support\u2019 to Muslim Brotherhood.\u201d The piece attempts to pick apart some statements by El-Sayed\u2019s Republican opponent Mike Rogers and some GOP allies. <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cfact-check\u201d asserts that \u201cEl-Sayed did not pledge support for the Muslim Brotherhood, as detractors claim.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNor did he do so in <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/276648.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2012 group letter<\/a> defending then-Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was backed by the Muslim Brotherhood and had been elected earlier that year,\u201d the article asserts. (Note the link in the story is no longer active). <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefending\u201d is supporting. Supporting is Supporting. As the communique states, \u201cWe, leaders of the Egyptian community, <em>support <\/em>the revolutionary decisions taken by the president \u2026\u201d Morsi was elected and in power because of the Muslim Brotherhood. He was (he\u2019s dead now) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/profile-egypts-new-president-mohamed-morsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chairman<\/a> of the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s Freedom and Justice Party. The letter spells out support for the regime, which is the Muslim Brotherhood regime. And that includes support for crushing journalists critical of that regime, a point the publication conveniently left out of its \u201cfact-check.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Beyond the disingenuous assertions, Bridge Michigan rolls out corporate media\u2019s standard line of defense against criticism of Muslim political candidates \u2014 that they are \u201cfaith-based attacks.\u201d The article cites the highly suspect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/4097\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Council on American-Islamic Relations <\/a>(CAIR), which was named an <a href=\"https:\/\/extremism.gwu.edu\/sites\/g\/files\/zaxdzs5746\/files\/2025-10\/CAIR%E2%80%99s%2520Familiar%2520Dance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unindicted co-conspirator<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/119\/bills\/hr4097\/BILLS-119hr4097ih.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>USA v. Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development<\/em><\/a>  case. The case involved financing of terrorism organization Hamas. <\/p>\n<p>Islamic groups and religious leaders have seen a significant uptick in harassment and threats of violence since El-Sayed\u2019s nomination, CAIR\u2019s Amy V. Doukoure told the publication. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would help de-escalate this is for mainstream politicians to call it what it is, which is blatant un-American racism and xenophobia and Islamophobia,\u201d Doukoure said. <\/p>\n<p>Is it Islamophobia to report that the Democrat who wants to be Michigan\u2019s next U.S. senator once cheered on an oppressive Islamist regime\u2019s assault on the press? <\/p>\n<p>No. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s journalism \u2014 something El-Sayed selectively defends. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Matt Kittle is a senior elections correspondent for The Federalist.
