The school, part of the 1619 Project Education Network, emphasized teaching African American history through narratives that highlight black contributions and portray america\u2019s founding as rooted in slavery. Hannah-Jones criticizes the school\u2019s educational shortcomings, such as lack of effective instruction and discipline, which contributed to her daughter\u2019s poor academic performance, especially in math. She admits that policies inspired by \u201cantiracist\u201d ideology, like eliminating homework and avoiding discipline, undermined academic rigor and left students unprepared for high school, resulting in her daughter\u2019s significant skill gaps. The piece argues that this ideology prioritizes racial narratives over academic standards, harming students\u2019 readiness and perpetuating a cycle of underachievement. hannah-Jones\u2019 experience exemplifies how the racial-focused approach may undermine educational effectiveness and hinder genuine progress for students.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The failing school that race-grifter Nikole Hannah-Jones sent her child to used Hannah-Jones\u2019 ahistorical 1619 Project as part of its curriculum, public records show.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah-Jones recently wrote an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/20\/magazine\/ny-public-schools-black-students-segregation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essay<\/a> for The New York Times describing her daughter Najya\u2019s educational experiences at a failing, predominantly black middle school in New York City, where she was sent for express racial purposes. While the essay focused predominantly on Najya\u2019s inability to do math due to lack of preparedness from her middle school, the Urban Assembly Unison School, it notably left out the school\u2019s use of the 1619 Project, which likely indicates it also failed to provide her with a sufficient historical education.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 1619 Project\u2019s website, Unison was part of the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/1619education.org\/1619-community\/1619-education-network\/meet-2022-cohort\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cohort of schools and teachers<\/a> in the 1619 Project Education Network, which \u201callowed students to explore The 1619 Project themes in creative and innovative ways with performance tasks that included redesigned textbooks, student performance showcases, and designing memorials for their wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Najya would have been in seventh grade and therefore a student at Unison for two years of the 1619 fabrications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur project will encompass learning history through the power of narratives that shift from the deficit view to a more celebratory &#038; centering of the many powerful contributions of Black people in America,\u201d the Unison <a href=\"https:\/\/1619education.org\/team\/unison-trailblazers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">page<\/a> on the 1619 website states. Hannah-Jones\u2019 1619 Project is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaunisonschool.org\/core-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prominently displayed<\/a> on the school\u2019s curriculum page.<\/p>\n<p>The basic premise of the 1619 Project is that the true founding of America happened in 1619 when the first slave ships with Africans arrived. Everything that happened after that, including the American Revolution, was really for the express purpose of continuing the institution of slavery, as opposed to any grander purpose like freedom, liberty, and self-determination. It is an \u201cantiracist\u201d project that has suffered withering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2019\/12\/22\/five-professors-say-project-should-be-amended-we-disagree-says-new-york-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rebuttals<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/20\/magazine\/we-respond-to-the-historians-who-critiqued-the-1619-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historians<\/a> across the political spectrum for its numerous errors, but the race-essentialist lens that undergirds it goes far beyond the false telling of history.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cantiracist\u201d movement as a whole means curricula across subjects, school policies on <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/23\/trump-admin-ends-obama-policies-that-forced-schools-to-discipline-based-on-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discipline<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/15\/exclusive-virginia-school-district-encourages-student-commitment-to-dei-as-major-achievement-metric\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grading<\/a> are all rearranged to coddle particular groups of students based on skin color, while ignoring everyone else. Unsurprisingly then, \u201cantiracism\u201d is the essential premise of Hannah-Jones\u2019 essay, even though she tries not to admit it, and the \u201cantiracist\u201d elements described above were deeply embedded in the school she selected.<\/p>\n<p>Unison, Hannah-Jones wrote, is \u201cpart of a cohort of themed public schools created to advance the economic and social mobility of low-income students and students of color through rigorous instruction and a focus on social-emotional learning.\u201d The institution had a \u201cfood-justice club\u201d and held multiple \u201cBlack History Month assemblies and spirit weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The racial programming appeared to work, as Najya herself, when looking for a more rigorous high school, said, \u201cI\u2019d never been in a school with white kids and don\u2019t think I really wanted that,\u201d but between it all, the true consequences of 1619-informed \u201cantiracism\u201d came out as well.<\/p>\n<p>  \u201cUnison had eliminated homework because studies show that it does not have much impact on academic achievement, and that assigning it often sets up for failure students who are so academically behind that they cannot do the work on their own. Under the Unison system, students completed their assignments during class time where a teacher could guide and help if they got stuck. But for students like Najya, this practice proved absolutely harmful,\u201d Hannah-Jones admitted. \u201cShe\u2019d bemoan how the less experienced teachers struggled to manage their classrooms and would expend so much attention on the small number of kids acting out that they\u2019d be unable to complete their lessons or help a student stuck on a problem. There were occasionally fights in the hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of disciplining any children who acted out in class, teachers had to \u201crefocus students and mitigate conflict\u201d in real-time, meaning they had very little opportunity for actual class instruction. In the same sentence, Hannah-Jones claims that \u201cthis is good educational practice,\u201d and then adds, \u201cbut kids like Najya, who were just trying to do their work, saw this treatment as deeply unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality such policies are unfair because not disciplining students deprives both misbehaving students and their more studious peers of educational consistency throughout the day. Like not assigning homework, or \u201cequity grading,\u201d there is no accountability or rigor during or outside the school day, and students in such schools often end up advancing years in school while remaining academically stunted.<\/p>\n<p>That is precisely what happened to Najya in math, as Hannah-Jones details, but the ideology Hannah-Jones is infamous for bears no small portion of blame for rendering her daughter and every other student subjected to it incapable of performing in schools with even the most basic academic standards.<\/p>\n<p>Najya noticed that her middle school was lacking, and to her credit wanted to pursue a high school that might actually challenge her, and the school she selected for this purpose was predominantly white and Asian. When she finally got to high school, it became clear that Unison had not come close to preparing her.<\/p>\n<p>Her A\u2019s and B\u2019s at Unison amounted to failing grades in high school. She struggled to keep up with homework assignments and nightly reading, and because she \u201chad never been taught the skills of independent study, \u2026 suddenly the child whose identity had been the nerdy honors student was working harder than she ever had and barely keeping up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An algebra tutoring center told Hannah-Jones that \u201cNajya knew very little algebra and had huge gaps in many of the building blocks of math that she should have learned in elementary school, like mastery of long division and fractions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah-Jones\u2019 confession highlights that the 1619 Project is not simply a narrative that tells black students (and their parents) that they should always be aggrieved because they are perpetually victims of an age-old injustice that cannot truly be rectified. Rather, the ideology behind Hannah-Jones\u2019 life work cements a broader racial framework into schools that awards students A\u2019s for not being able to read, write, or do math, and continues to pass them through the school system with no remediation until they are adults who are incapable of functioning properly in society.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah-Jones\u2019 ideology did not just ruin her own daughter\u2019s academic potential by choice; it also poisons by force the educations of countless other students who attend the schools where the ideology has free rein.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Breccan F.
