Last May, Trump <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-refugees-white-south-africa-border-cap-bfe3974adf6c655eca7a5c30c1f9197f\">raised<\/a> the limit to 17,500, with the additional spots primarily reserved for Afrikaners,\u00a0 or South Africans who are the descendants of Dutch, Huguenot, and German settlers beginning in the mid-17th century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. accepted its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3408898\/trump-officials-white-south-africans-afrikaner-refugees-arrival-dc\/\">first batch<\/a> of Afrikaners, 54 people, during Trump\u2019s term last May, after the president <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/addressing-egregious-actions-of-the-republic-of-south-africa\/\">raised concerns<\/a> that their government seized Afrikaners\u2019 agricultural property without compensation, and that many of the farmers are being killed. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has vigorously denied concerns that the minority group is under assault, though critics say attacks on farms are often <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.genocidewatch.com\/single-post\/2017\/03\/25\/-bury-them-alive-white-south-africans-fear-for-their-future-as-horrific-farm-attacks-esc\">accompanied<\/a> by extensive torture, rape, and mutilation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey happen to be white, but whether they\u2019re white or black makes no difference to me, but white farmers are being brutally killed, and their land is being confiscated in South Africa, and the newspapers and the media, television media, doesn\u2019t even talk about it,\u201d Trump said last May.\u00a0\u201cIf it were the other way around, they talk about it, that would be the only story they talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Racial tensions have long troubled\u00a0South Africa following the end of apartheid policies in 1993, which favored white citizens over black citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South African government officials maintain that the violence Afrikaners, who are white, have experienced isn\u2019t racially motivated, framing it as a reflection of a crime problem the whole country is battling. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But allegations that Afrikaners are <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3414599\/fleeing-persecution-south-african-refugees-scramble-politics\/\">facing systemic oppression<\/a> weren\u2019t helped when Ramaphosa signed into law in 2025 a policy that allows the state to seize farmland from private owners without compensation if the government determines that doing so is \u201cjust and equitable and in the public interest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the U.S., Democrats have complained that the Trump administration\u2019s assistance to Afrikaners is one that deliberately favors white people, suggesting it is racist. During a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=14C-bsW-TOk\">Senate hearing<\/a> with Secretary of State Marco Rubio last May, Sen.
