Despite facts indicating her death was likely a result of black-on-black violence, with her alleged killer being a Black man already arrested, the AP attempted too frame her death as a racist lynching. The author argues that the AP disregarded straightforward evidence and the victim\u2019s family&#8217;s statements to promote a narrative linking her death to ancient racism and lynching. Similar tactics were accused of being used by CNN, emphasizing racial themes without sufficient evidence. But if there\u2019s any reason to give the outlet respect, it\u2019s that they will never let facts get in their way of pushing a narrative they care about. This time, the outlet has turned a story about a black woman\u2019s alleged murder at the hands of a black man into a story about racist lynchings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe death of Tasia Fortune, a Black Mississippi woman found hanging from a tree on Aug. 3, has stirred distressing memories of the grim history of lynchings across the U.S. South,\u201d The AP <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AP\/status\/2102170689499169209?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> on X. The implication was clear: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utm_sourcerssutm_mediumrssutm_campaigncnn-is-trying-to-drum-up-another-race-hoax\/\" title=\"... Is Trying To Drum Up Another Race Hoax\">black woman found hanging<\/a> is a symbol of racism and that the South is racist. Fortune\u2019s death was tragic. Her body was found hanging behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2194520135\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only problem for the AP\u2019s narrative is that Fortune\u2019s alleged killer had already been arrested <em>before<\/em> the AP put out the disingenuous tweet suggesting there was a racist element in her killing, and her alleged killer is also black.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AP themselves knew this key fact too, having released an article three full days before trying to connect Fortune\u2019s death to racism that <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tasia-fortune-mississippi-hanging-arrest-4aa7ada8208008fea580369ede0eef37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> authorities arrested Jarques Ratliff \u2014 a black man. In fact, the AP reported that Fortune\u2019s mother \u201cdoesn\u2019t believe race had anything to do with her daughter\u2019s death.\u201d Instead, Fortune\u2019s mother <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mississippi-hanging-lynchings-1e48dfdcfe985506db17bbe5c4edb8dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the AP<\/a> she thinks \u201cthis is something very personal, very personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that didn\u2019t stop the AP from going out of its way to try to link Fortune\u2019s tragic death to racism. Three days after acknowledging Fortune\u2019s death appears to be yet another example of black-on-black crime, the AP published an article entitled: \u201cCases of Black people found hanged in the US South are a reminder of nation\u2019s lynching history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe death <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tasia-fortune-mississippi-hanging-2f2128ab4eab15340c0e16816183393e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of a Black Mississippi<\/a> woman found hanging from a tree has stirred distressing memories of the grim history of lynchings across the U.S. South,\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mississippi-hanging-lynchings-1e48dfdcfe985506db17bbe5c4edb8dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AP wrote<\/a>, implying Fortune\u2019s death was a racist lynching. The AP does note that Fortune was allegedly killed by a fellow black man, but quickly tries to assure readers that there is <em>still <\/em>something racist about the killing \u201cregardless\u201d of the actual facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRegardless of the circumstances of the case, for many Black people, the imagery of a rope and noose evokes the legacy of lynching and vigilante violence against Black people in the U.S. and brings with it deep pain and trauma,\u201d the article reads. The piece then quotes Jackson, Mississippi activist Brad Franklin, who said that what\u2019s happening in 2026 \u2014 that is, black-on black-crime \u2014 is the same \u201cfeeling\u201d and experience that black Americans felt \u201cin 1956 and 1966\u201d when there were racially motivated lynchings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AP had the facts, spoke to Fortune\u2019s mother who dismissed race as a connection, and yet still chose to make lynching the lens through which readers would learn about Fortune\u2019s death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That type of propagandist approach might sound familiar for anyone who <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/13\/cnn-is-trying-to-drum-up-another-race-hoax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frequents CNN<\/a>. Weeks earlier, CNN\u2019s Omar Jimenez did a report prior to a suspect being arrested and acknowledged that while no details were known about her alleged killer, \u201cThe raw imagery of a black person hanging from the tree in the American South evokes a very painful history.\u201d Jimenez tried to reinforce the racist undertone by grouping Fortune\u2019s death with two other \u201clynchings\u201d in the area before noting the other two individuals were reportedly to have died by suicide (and one of the deceased was white).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the information provided by Jimenez had established a pattern of racism, so linking three deaths together while emphasizing a \u201cpainful history\u201d in \u201cthe American South\u201d was a disingenuous attempt to create the appearance of racism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortune deserves justice. Her family deserves answers.
