Just before you give up hope, the door gives way to a firefighter\u2019s axe. He races into the smoky hellscape, throws you across his shoulders, and carries you to safety.<\/p>\n<p>In that moment, do you care where your savior went to high school?<\/p>\n<p>Of course not. You care about strength, skills, and experience \u2014 not schooling.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this April, 22-year-old Andrew Coates was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2026\/09\/18\/homeschooled-firefighter-applicants-rejection-sparks-fremont-dispute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected<\/a> by the Fremont Fire Department just because he was homeschooled.<\/p>\n<p>As a volunteer for the Cedar Bluffs Fire Department and a state-licensed EMT, you\u2019d think that Coates would be more than qualified for the job. Jennifer McDuffee, the HR director for Fremont, Nebraska, apparently disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>When she was asked to defend her decision before the Civil Service Commission, McDuffee argued that it\u2019s a \u201cstandard understanding\u201d that when someone asks for a high school diploma or GED, they want an accredited diploma.<\/p>\n<p>They later quietly adjusted this job description, suggesting that perhaps it wasn\u2019t as standard of an understanding as they had thought.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission ultimately refused to overturn McDuffee\u2019s rejection of the aspiring firefighter. This is all the more suspect when you realize that McDuffee was the Commission secretary. She was a part of the same ruling body tasked with reviewing her work.<\/p>\n<p>A strange conflict of interest to be sure, but not nearly as strange as rejecting someone from a job simply because the word \u201chomeschool\u201d is on their diploma.<\/p>\n<p>Homeschoolers generally score <a href=\"https:\/\/nheri.org\/research-facts-on-homeschooling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15 to 25 percentile points<\/a> above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/class-weeps-with-joy-as-sarah-huckabee-sanders-saves-their-school-then-a-progressive-group-steps-in\/\" title=\"Class celebrates as Sarah Huckabee Sanders saves school, but progressive group intervenes.\">public school average<\/a> on standardized tests regardless of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nheri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ray-2010-Academic-Achievement-and-Demographic-Traits-of-Homeschool-Students.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parental education or household income<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding social and emotional development, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/0161956X.2025.2605900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">64 percent of studies<\/a> show homeschool students perform better than those in conventional schools. They are also more <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ1030224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">politically tolerant<\/a> than other students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel the city of Fremont\u2019s really missing out here,\u201d Cedar Bluffs Fire Chief Chris Lichtenberg remarked.<\/p>\n<p>He saw with his own two eyes what the data implies: homeschoolers are very valuable employees.<\/p>\n<p>That is why Lichtenberg firmly concluded that \u201cbecause of his home schooling, you guys are discriminating against him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not an isolated error; it\u2019s how the institutions operate.<\/p>\n<p>The system is designed to funnel children into the indoctrination stations we call public schools.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of educational freedom don\u2019t need to ban homeschooling.
