They gave us the most beautiful car ever made, the Jaguar E-Type, The Beatles gave us arguably the best non-Beach Boys road song of all time, \u201cDrive My Car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They gave us James Bond and his missile-armed Aston Martins or submarine Lotus Esprits. Even when their car industry had turned to rubbish, they gave us the greatest automotive television trio of the 21st century: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/meghan-markle-raked-across-coals-major-celeb-catching-heat-said\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremy Clarkson<\/a>, James May, and Richard Hammond, the blokes behind \u201cTop Gear\u201d and \u201cThe Grand Tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re going to say the <em>Germans<\/em> did more? Please. Try driving an original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/near-50-year-old-cold-case-heats-feds-double-check-cigarette-pack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VW Beetle<\/a>, inarguably the most overrated car of all time even before you factor in its Nazi connections. Their idea of a good driving song is Kraftwerk\u2019s \u201cAutobahn,\u201d which is considerably less fun than being on the actual autobahn with one of those 25-horsepower original VW Beetles.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve given us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-racing-superstar-vows-defy-new-rule-banning-political-speech-nothing-will-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Schumacher<\/a> and massive BMW repair bills. Give me a Mini, a winding road, and \u201cRubber Soul\u201d on the stereo any day of the week.<\/p>\n<p>But after giving so much to the automobile, Britain is turning against it \u2014 or, at least, lefty Britain is. And while activists <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/climate-protestors-charged-stonehenge-2571877\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">throwing paint<\/a> on Stonehenge and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c243v5m0r0lo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soup<\/a> on Van Goghs in London museums to protest oil use is one kind of ridiculousness, that can be dismissed as the fringes. The U.K. Guardian, I wish, could be dismissed thusly \u2014 but the lefty rag is one of the most important publications in the English-speaking world, sadly.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s really trying to make the phrase \u201cpetro-masculinity\u201d happen.<\/p>\n<p>For the second time this year, the outlet has run a piece about this supposed phenomenon, this time by a performative male annoyance by the name of George Monbiot, who was given space for an opinion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/sep\/17\/driving-fast-dangerous-lawless-towns-countryside-suv-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a> last Thursday: \u201cDriving that\u2019s too fast, too dangerous and utterly lawless: why do we tolerate this petro-masculinity?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beats me. What\u2019s \u201cpetro-masculinity?\u201d Well, per Monbiot, it\u2019s \u201cSUVs and pickup trucks driven without care or conscience\u201d and \u201cthe MAGAfication of transport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The term, explained in the Guardian\u2019s first \u201cpetro-masculinity\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/apr\/22\/masculinity-gender-climate-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">think-piece<\/a> back in April for Earth Day, is actually an invention of political science academic Cara Daggett. It, Andrew Boyd wrote in that slice of fatuousness, \u201cdescribes a pernicious fusion between fossil fuel use, climate change denial, and defense of authoritarian white patriarchal masculinity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Boyd:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>For most people, petro-masculinity dramatically erupted into public view during the 2022 Twitter\/X showdown between manosphere bully Andrew Tate and Greta Thunberg.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPlease provide your  address so I can send a complete list of my car collection and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/andrew-tate-arrested-after-clue-in-video-to-greta-thunberg-tipped-police-off-that-he-was-in-country-report\/\" title=\"... is Arrested after Clue in Video to ... Tips Police Off He Was in Country: Report\">respective enormous emissions<\/a>,\u201d Tate tweeted at Greta, along with a photo of him pumping gas into one of them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Picking up on the sexually boastful undertones of those \u201cenormous emissions\u201d, Greta slyly clapped back: \u201cyes, please do enlighten me.  me at smalld***energy@getalife.com.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m personally of the opinion that in a showdown between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/greta-thunberg-arrested-caught-supporting-literal-anti-jewish-terrorist-org-kid-left-platformed-god-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greta Thunberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/footage-catches-andrew-tate-trying-subtly-pass-off-phone-guard-rape-sex-trafficking-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Tate<\/a>, the only real possible winner would be everybody, and only if they could shut up about everything else but each other and not bother all of us for the rest of their lives. But I digress. We go back to the Monbiot piece, where he describes all kinds of \u201cpetro-masculinity,\u201d including street racing and speeding and modifying your car.<\/p>\n<p>Or truck, as the case may be:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Now I live in Devon, where there\u2019s a different culture of antisocial driving. Here it\u2019s mostly middle-aged men in \u201clifted\u201d pickup trucks, which have been modified to be as loud and smoky as possible. Two local SUVs have been refitted to \u201croll coal\u201d from twin exhaust towers mounted behind the cab, releasing a dense black cloud of soot when the driver hits the \u201csmoke switch\u201d. Adapting your truck for this purpose means buying a \u201cdelete kit\u201d to bypass the vehicle\u2019s emissions control system, retuning the engine and fitting bigger injectors. The practice emerged in the US, both as an anti-environmental protest and as a form of amusement. It is largely deployed against cyclists, pedestrians and electric vehicles. I\u2019ve seen these two trucks doing it, blinding the drivers behind and choking everyone around. Of course it\u2019s illegal. But it doesn\u2019t seem to be a priority for the police in my area.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, I\u2019d say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/london-mayor-sits-silence-confronted-knife-infested-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">knife crime<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/shocking-report-250000-young-white-girls-victimized-muslim-rape-gangs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rape gangs<\/a> are probably a bigger issue for the British police than lifted trucks which \u201croll coal\u201d \u2014 but I\u2019m not a Guardian columnist, which means I\u2019ve heard of these things.<\/p>\n<p>He also lamented the rise of the SUV, which represents over half of new vehicle sales in the United Kingdom:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>And what are they for? On narrow country lanes round here, tourists in these \u201coff-road\u201d vehicles won\u2019t back up if it means touching a hedge, in case the high-gloss finish on their Wankpanzer Childkiller SUV gets scratched. In one of the poshest parts of London, the Chelsea Truck Company advertises \u201ciconic urban 4x4s\u201d. \u201cIconic\u201d appears to mean huge. But what the hell is an \u201curban 4\u00d74\u201d? And why is it legal?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What he doesn\u2019t mention, of course, is that the popularity of the SUV is in large part due to do-gooders who would read the Guardian, at least in the United States; when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-cuts-obama-red-tape-rolls-back-vehicle-fuel-efficiency-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel efficiency<\/a> regulations were passed in the 1970s, there was a carve-out for vehicles that were supposed to be used for real off-roading and farm work. These SUVs were classified as light trucks \u2014 and by the 1990s, <a href=\"https:\/\/autos.yahoo.com\/policy-and-environment\/articles\/everything-suv-today-because-fuel-183000929.html?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autoblog<\/a> noted in a June article, automakers realized they needed to invest less money into engineering a vehicle which qualified as a light truck, even when it was actually just a glorified station wagon where you sat up real high.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, meddlesome bureaucrats and clueless environmentalists!<\/p>\n<p>But yeah, petro-masculinity, man. What\u2019re you going to do? That\u2019s why they get these \u201curban 4x4s.\u201d It\u2019s all testosterone. And how do you get through this MAGAfication of petroleum?<\/p>\n<p>To Boyd, the other Guardian opinion writer who used this preposterous term, the antidote is clear: \u201ceco-masculinity.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Through media literacy, social critique, hand-to-hand ideological battles on the internet, and clever culture-jamming and lampooning, climate and other activists are working to decode petro-masculinity. They\u2019re pointing out how ridiculous and \u201cconstructed\u201d and self-defeating petro-masculinity is for men, their communities, and the planet itself, and hoping, over time, this will help unravel the thick association between fossil fuels and aggrieved masculine identity. Thunberg\u2019s take down of Andrew Tate is one example; this article, I suppose, is another. \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So men, this Earth Day, let\u2019s commit to untangling ourselves from petro-masculinity, and stepping in to our eco-masculinity. Let\u2019s mobilize our ingenuity and gather our courage \u2013 and feel our grief, if we need to \u2013 so we can remember how much we actually care about this beautiful, miraculous planet we all live on together. And then let\u2019s step up to protect it. After all, what\u2019s more \u201cprotector masculinity\u201d than protecting the Earth?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Literally anything. Rolling coal. Listening to \u201cDrive My Car.\u201d Watching \u201cTop Gear.\u201d Heck, watching a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/polling-finds-pete-buttigieg-less-popular-black-voters-former-kkk-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pete Buttigieg<\/a> media briefing. Eating tofu, but frying it. Listening to Alanis Morissette. \u00a0Almost everything, literally.<\/p>\n<p>The term is ridiculous on a number of levels, the first being the desperate attempt to make the awkward neologism <em>happen<\/em>, as if it were just a natural outgrowth of the English language. This has the same tocsin as your grandma trying to use the word \u201cjiggy\u201d to sound hip in space year 2026.<\/p>\n<p>And what is \u201cpetro-masculinity?\u201d As much as Boyd tried to define it through Daggett, Monbiot\u2019s Thursday column is the perfect representation of what they\u2019re trying to make it: any kind of driving that\u2019s remotely fun. No, you shouldn\u2019t be street-racing \u2014 but to this clod, if you\u2019re not tooling to work under the speed limit in an underpowered, overpriced, cramped EV, you\u2019re some sort of petro-masculine jerk.<\/p>\n<p>You may say this is a minor quibble, a quirk in the media void that doesn\u2019t merit attention. But no, make no mistake: Unless this is called out for how silly it is, the scourge will spread, the neologism will be picked up by more and more liberal outlets. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alleged-fabricator-contributed-guardians-manafort-assange-bombshell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> is always the canary in the coal mine when it comes to woke piffle, and that canary is deader than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4vuW6tQ0218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monty Python\u2019s parrot<\/a> right now.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of things quintessentially English: Get it together, mates. You gave us the roadster, \u201cThe Grand Tour,\u201d and the Rolls Royce. Are you really going to let a bunch of kale-eating scolds get away with sneaking this ridiculous term into our political lexicon? Please.
