In her recent New York Times Magazine article, titled &#8220;In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray my own?&#8221;, she admits that her educational ideas, which emphasize systemic racism, have negatively impacted her daughter, Najya. Despite initially excelling academically, Najya struggled after transferring to a more challenging school wiht poor conditions, including violence and overlooked homework, partly due to Hannah-jones\u2019 decisions to enroll her in underperforming public schools. Hannah-Jones blames the staff&#8217;s laziness and fear of accusations of racism, which she sees as the root of her daughter&#8217;s academic setbacks, though many of these issues stem from broader systemic failures, including poorly trained staff and low standards reinforced by critical race theory and diversity initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah-Jones&#8217; emphasis on racism as the primary cause of educational and behavioral problems overlooks personal responsibility, with her blaming testing and school choice for exposing her daughter&#8217;s deficiencies that warranted tutoring. Her narrative reflects a broader ideology that discourages accountability, instead attributing disparities to systemic oppression, a view that she and her supporters promote while dismissing the importance of individual effort. Critics argue that this focus on systemic racism, under the guise of diversity and inclusion, ultimately harms marginalized students by excusing poor discipline and academic neglect.<\/p>\n<p>The story criticizes how ideologies like cultural Marxism and DEI distort reality, reducing personal agency and responsible behavior, which are essential for individual and societal progress. It suggests that honest feedback and accountability could have helped Najya and other children achieve better outcomes earlier, but instead, Hannah-Jones\u2019 worldview has contributed to ongoing dysfunction and suffering in educational environments. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/20\/magazine\/ny-public-schools-black-students-segregation.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ClE.c5tX.gpav3lpAvE4N\">latest article<\/a> for The New York Times Magazine, she does it again. It\u2019s titled, \u201cIn Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In it, the creator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nas.org\/blogs\/article\/will-there-ever-be-honest-dialogue-about-the-1619-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scholarly abomination<\/a> known as the 1619 Project admits that her warped educational ideas have harmed her daughter\u2019s future and their relationship. When her daughter finally convinced her parents to let her attend a more challenging high school, she went from getting straight As in math to \u201cbarely keeping up\u201d: \u201cAfter an assessment, the center\u2019s director called me in and told me that Najya knew very little algebra and had huge gaps in many of the building blocks of math that she should have learned in elementary school, like mastery of long division and fractions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was after Najya had gotten As in a previous algebra class and been on her middle school\u2019s honor roll. For elementary, Hannah-Jones and her husband had deliberately enrolled their daughter in one of New York City\u2019s worst public schools, which Hannah-Jones calls \u201ca poor Black one.\u201d In 2016, Hannah-Jones\u2019 daughter was literally on the cover of NYT Magazine to flaunt her mother\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn the outside world, my choice had earned me valor,\u201d Hannah-Jones writes in her latest essay for NYT Magazine. But it earned her daughter unnecessary suffering and academic delays. As early as first grade, Hannah-Jones writes, her daughter endured unsupervised, violent lunch periods: \u201cChildren were running wild, chasing, hitting and pushing each other while the teacher\u2019s aides and cafeteria workers stood by looking bored.\u201d The staff ignored the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>The same continued in Najya Hannah-Jones\u2019 middle school, with teachers assigning no homework, violence regularly taking over instruction time, and \u201cfights in the hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/surveys\/ntps\/tables\/ntps1718_200724_t1n.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statistics show<\/a> the public schools with the most black students also have the highest percentages of black teachers and staff. The likelihood that many of the staff allowing children to attack each other during lunch were black is high, especially since <a href=\"https:\/\/infohub.nyced.org\/reports\/government-reports\/report-on-school-based-staff-demographics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state racial bean-counting<\/a> shows that more than half of Najya\u2019s elementary staff are black. Yet Hannah-Jones blames the staff\u2019s laziness and cowardice not on bad leadership, bad training, bad character, bad parenting, or any other proxy for personal responsibility, but on the only culprit she apparently believes in \u2014 racism.<\/p>\n<p>To the extent racism was at play, the most likely form of it is the racism Hannah-Jones has become a well-known name promoting. That would be false accusations of racism any time someone who isn\u2019t white, male, or Christian faces accountability. Yes, people are so scared of these false accusations \u2014 which have ruined many people\u2019s lives \u2014 they will do anything to avoid them, including failing to reprimand unruly children and giving poor students bad grades.<\/p>\n<p>Further, part of the reason teachers in majority non-white schools are often low-quality is that leftist cries of \u201cracism\u201d have gutted academics at every level that leads to a teaching job, from K-12 to college and teacher certification. It was to \u201cdiversify teaching ranks\u201d that New York <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Tommy_USA\/status\/2102067212525674637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eliminated<\/a> its already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nystce.nesinc.com\/content\/docs\/NYSTCE_ISR_back_ALST.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low-quality<\/a> teacher certification test in 2017. It\u2019s because corruptly elevated people like Hannah-Jones blame \u201cracism\u201d for non-white kids\u2019 worse outcomes instead of demanding personal responsibility that standards in schools are low enough to allow for this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n[A]  few days before school let out for winter break, I received a folder in Najya\u2019s backpack with the math assignments I had been requesting since our conference. Once I tucked her into bed, I sat at my dining room table and scanned one page, then another and another. None of them were graded. I started checking Najya\u2019s work and discovered most of her answers were wrong. Najya believed herself to be good at math \u2014 it was her favorite subject. But now I understood she thought she was correctly solving all her problems because her teacher was not checking her work. Similarly, Najya\u2019s writing assignments were rife with uncorrected punctuation, capitalization and grammar errors.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead of recognizing she\u2019s a top contributor to this problem, Hannah-Jones complains about the outcomes she\u2019s spent her professional life earning gobs of money and prestigious awards creating. Indeed, the very tests that Hannah-Jones also demonizes as \u2014 what else? \u2014 instruments of white supremacy are essentially the only reason she finally gets her daughter tutoring to overcome her school-induced deficiencies. <\/p>\n<p>To the extent that racism is to blame for Hannah-Jones and her husband\u2019s mismanagement of their daughter\u2019s childhood, there\u2019s a good case to be made it\u2019s mostly their own. That\u2019s because refusing to hold people of some skin colors accountable to the same standards everyone else must meet, solely on the basis of their skin color, is classic bigotry. <\/p>\n<p>This is how the Marxist ideology dressed as \u201cdiversity, equity, and inclusion\u201d works: when the \u201coppressor group\u201d \u2014 like men or whites \u2014 face the obvious consequences of their actions, they deserved it. When the \u201cvictim group\u201d \u2014 like black people or women \u2014 face the obvious consequences of their actions, it\u2019s someone else\u2019s fault. <\/p>\n<p>This is the racist heuristic that the Hannah-Joneses applied to their education decisions for their daughter, and it\u2019s responsible for their daughter\u2019s suffering. This is true not just for their daughter, but also for the children Hannah-Jones claims she damaged her daughter to help. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because what all those rioting first graders needed and deserved was discipline, which they\u2019d get more of if most of their parents were married like responsible people. But DEI doctrine <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/10\/13\/no-taking-police-out-of-schools-and-refusing-to-discipline-wont-help-brown-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">labels disciplining<\/a> non-white kids \u201cracist.\u201d Therefore, black and brown kids are spared rebuke, which is a loving refusal to allow them to destroy their lives through vice. While blaming fake racism, the real racism of DEI actually harms those it claims to serve. It\u2019s repeatedly low test results that finally result in her parents giving Najya tutoring and a better school. Without them, her daughter might still believe she\u2019s a top student due to her corruptly awarded As and honor roll status. Incredibly, Hannah-Jones blames for this whole debacle the very instruments that rescued her child in the end: testing and school choice.<\/p>\n<p>This story is why the DEI Marxism that Hannah-Jones has profited from her entire life is so evil. It\u2019s because it lies to people about reality. It tells them that they have no agency, no responsibility for their own lives if they are born into a certain ethnicity. Just as it almost derailed Najya\u2019s acquisition of basic, elementary-school-level knowledge for life, DEI\u2019s erasure of individual accountability destroys human lives and ultimately civilization itself.<\/p>\n<p>Cultural Marxism insulates its targets from the constructive criticism that every human being needs daily to improve who we are and, consequently, the neighborhoods and countries to which we belong. Accurate feedback, which includes negative feedback when warranted, pushes people towards the highest excellence we personally can achieve. Wise men love rebuke, the Bible says, exactly for this reason. That\u2019s why it would have been far kinder to give Najya Bs and Cs earlier, and even hold her back a grade if necessary, rather than putting her on the honor roll when she didn\u2019t deserve it.<\/p>\n<p>If Hannah-Jones had gotten some constructive criticism to heart decades ago, when everyone was obviously biting their tongues because <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikole_Hannah-Jones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she\u2019s female and half-black<\/a>, imagine not only how much suffering it would have saved her daughter but also many other kids. Instead of winning awards for telling big lies, she actually could have helped someone.
