In high-profile contests elsewhere, such as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4721145\/talarico-reverse-stance-transgender-athlete-girl-sport\/\">Texas, candidates <\/a>have made similar backtracks in their positions on transgender athletes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/host2.adimpact.com\/admo\/viewer\/5978cd26-0340-478b-8098-18c5b79056bf\/\">says in an ad<\/a> that she \u201cvoted with Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of our schools because parents know what\u2019s best for their kids, and boys should not play in girls\u2019 sports.\u201d The line is bookended by comments about affordability, the Iran war, and inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the claims, the 43-year veteran of Congress voted against multiple bills that would have restricted transgender athlete participation in sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Congress, she opposed bills in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2023192\">2023<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/202512\">2025<\/a> to prohibit schools from allowing biological males to participate in girls\u2019 sports and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2024354\">voted against<\/a> a proposal in 2024 to roll back a Biden-era Education Department rule that allowed transgender athletes in women\u2019s sports. Kaptur faces Republican former Ohio state Rep. Joe Mitchell in a Cedar Rapids-anchored seat which Trump carried by 10 points, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.adimpact.com\/viewer\/87e4350e-5392-4e37-a247-57fbbb95eba9\">says<\/a> in a 30-second spot that \u201cchildren are made in the image of God\u201d and that \u201cwe need common sense rules.\u201d James, however, does not articulate specific plans for the issue.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">Rep. Washington needs to stay out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislation\/findLegislation\/floorVotes?action=result&#038;useFile=true&#038;chamberID=H&#038;calendarItemID=14305\">voted against<\/a> a bill that became law in 2022 to prohibit biological males in women\u2019s sports for grade schools and college, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/publications\/HJNL\/20230316_HJNL.pdf#page=5\">opposed<\/a> a school requirement in 2023 that students use only bathrooms corresponding to their biological sex, was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/publications\/HJNL\/20230420_HJNL.pdf#page=12\">against<\/a> a measure that same year that would have required parents be notified if a student sought to change their gender, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislation\/findLegislation\/floorVotes?action=result&#038;useFile=true&#038;chamberID=H&#038;calendarItemID=18125\">opposed<\/a> legislation in 2025 that, among other things, restricted the teaching of gender ideology in K-6 classrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trone Garriott\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.adimpact.com\/viewer\/51f9b073-53a6-4f37-9af2-7f2d6d549c71\">ad<\/a> says she opposes \u201cletting men in women\u2019s locker rooms and voted to let parents, not politicians, make decisions for their kids.\u201d She adds that \u201cpoliticians have become too extreme on these issues, and I\u2019ll always put kids and families first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a state lawmaker, Trone Garriott voted <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/publications\/SJNL\/20220302_SJNL.pdf#page=4\">against<\/a> several of the same measures, including to bar biological males from women\u2019s sports, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/publications\/SJNL\/20230307_SJNL.pdf#page=23\">require <\/a>students to use only bathrooms corresponding to their biological sex, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/publications\/SJNL\/20230419_SJNL.pdf#page=19\">require<\/a> schools to notify parents if their child asks to identify as a different gender. Trone Garriott, who is running against Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA), also <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/publications\/SJNL\/20230307_SJNL.pdf#page=26\">opposed<\/a> banning gender transition surgery and other related procedures for minors in 2023.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the candidates\u2019 campaigns responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three candidates\u2019 direct-to-camera ads underscore the thorny politics of the issue after Republicans spent millions hammering 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris over similar themes.
