Perhaps a candidate whose campaign floundered in large part due to her support of single-payer health care can explain to El-Sayed why support for socialized medicine will become an albatross around his neck.<\/p>\n<p>During her failed 2020 presidential campaign, then-Sen. Harris took nearly as many positions on single-payer health care as there are days in a week. In a CNN town hall with Jake Tapper in January 2019, she admitted her support for <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/31\/kamala-harris-reveals-medicare-means-ending-private-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">canceling people\u2019s current health insurance<\/a> with a few flippant words: \u201cLet\u2019s eliminate all of that. Let\u2019s move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kamala Harris Says She Wants To Eliminate Private Insurance Even If You Like Your Plan\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DJhuPtIsUI0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In a follow-up interview with Tapper in May 2019, she \u201cmove[d] on\u201d from her earlier position. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/tv\/tapper-grills-kamala-harris-on-eliminating-private-health-insurance-thats-not-what-i-meant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told Tapper<\/a> that \u201cI really do need to clean up what happened on that stage\u201d in January. She insisted that she supported the single-payer bill offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., but when Tapper rightly noted that \u201cthe bill gets rid of private insurance for everything,\u201d Harris pointed out that \u201cit doesn\u2019t get rid of supplemental insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This new position would fall into the category of \u201ctoo cute by half.\u201d While Harris claimed that she supported private health insurance, she also claimed to support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/1129\/text?s=1&#038;r=43#toc-id25c91cb96228483495ad9de0b47b79f8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sanders bill<\/a>, Section 107 of of which would ban all private coverage of treatments covered by the government-run plan. Claiming that you support \u201cprivate insurance,\u201d but only for procedures like plastic surgery, is just a sneaky way to avoid admitting that you want to effectively ban private coverage and throw millions of Americans off their existing plans in the process.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, in July 2019, Harris tried yet another approach. She rolled out her own <a href=\"https:\/\/kamalaharris.medium.com\/my-plan-for-medicare-for-all-7730370dd421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health care plan<\/a>, one where she claimed she would \u201callow private insurers to offer Medicare plans as a part of this system.\u201d In many respects, this proposal offered the worst of both worlds \u2014 it would cancel the coverage that most Americans currently obtain from their employers, even as it held the potential to anger progressives by allowing some form of private health coverage. But given that Harris proposed implementing this proposal over a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/07\/30\/kamala-harriss-health-plan-put-balloon-mortgage-american-taxpayers-wallets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10-year period<\/a> \u2014 guaranteeing that full implementation would occur under a different president \u2014 it was unclear whether or how this vision would ever come to fruition.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Free Care for Illegal Immigrants<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Harris could also educate El-Sayed on how socialized medicine would provide free, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ags-sue-to-stop-new-rule-giving-free-health-care-to-illegals\/\" title=\"AGs Sue To Stop New Rule Giving &#039;Free&#039; ... To Illegals\">taxpayer-funded health coverage<\/a> to those present in this country illegally. In the May 2019 interview with CNN\u2019s Tapper where she revised her position on banning private health coverage, Harris also stated her support for allowing undocumented immigrants to qualify for free health benefits: \u201cI am opposed to any policy that would deny in our country any human being from access to public safety, public education or public health, period.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kamala Harris Says She Supports Illegal Immigrants Getting Medicare\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0BR-NsriOVs?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In this respect, Harris stands far to the left of none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/05\/13\/kamala-harris-take-away-americans-health-insurance-make-pay-illegal-immigrants-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>. When testifying before Congress on health care legislation in September 1993, Clinton opposed allowing \u201cillegal aliens\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-sues-pfizer-over-testing-of-drugs-given-to-children\/\" title=\"Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Sues Pfizer Over Testing Of Drugs Given To Children\">receive taxpayer-funded benefits<\/a>, because she believed it would encourage additional unlawful migration to the United States:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We do not think the comprehensive health care benefits should be extended to those who are undocumented workers and illegal aliens. We do not want to do anything to encourage more illegal immigration into this country. We know now that too many people come in for medical care, as it is. We certainly don\u2019t want them having the same benefits that American citizens are entitled to have.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hillary Clinton Discusses Reforming the Malpractice System\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WTVQQubdJ-w?start=44&#038;feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Political Loser<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To the extent that any one issue sunk Harris\u2019 2020 candidacy, her constant flip-flopping on health care and single-payer prevented her from winning the Democratic nomination. She looked uninformed, inauthentic, and engaged in a constant, calculated game of political pandering rather than any deep-seated belief structure.<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding his support from the left, El-Sayed faces many of the same political problems.
