Democrats especially know they cannot win fair elections without making inroads in rural and small-town America, like the Texas areas Talarico needs to win a Senate seat. In fact, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interlochenpublicradio.org\/ipr-news\/2026-05-13\/abdul-el-sayed-courts-rural-democrats-at-campaign-event-in-manistee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaigning in rural<\/a> areas may have <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/owner\/Documents\/Leftist%20activists%20in%20rural%20America%20note%20that%20it%20was\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">given him the edge<\/a> in his primary against Haley Stevens.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats in general, and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in particular, are paying a lot more attention to rural America these days. That\u2019s because rural America \u201cis the wall the American Left keeps hitting,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/jun\/30\/democratic-socialists-rural-voters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> longtime DSA activist Bhaskar Sunkara.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats know that their brand is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-elections-pennsylvania-lifestyle-election-2020-fc79679ef54d850c0245f96dac37456c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toxic<\/a> in rural America. So, how to get elected while bearing a toxic brand? Sunkara advocates for a strong message of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/may\/07\/democrats-progressive-populism-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">progressive populism<\/a>\u201d delivered with \u201crhetorical discipline.\u201d In a word: propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>For Democrats, disciplined propaganda is critical to striking a delicate balance between keeping their base motivated and appealing to small-town and rural America. For example, with allies in the corporate media, they\u2019ve concocted the narrative of a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amac.us\/newsline\/don-t-buy-democrats-farm-revolt-narrative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Farmageddon<\/a>\u201d revolt in which farmers are angry with President Trump and the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the DSA is ever able to enact <a href=\"https:\/\/program.dsausa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSA_WDM2025Program_v2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its platform<\/a> \u2014 of abolishing the Senate, the Supreme Court, Electoral College, presidency and the Constitution itself \u2014 propaganda needn\u2019t be very disciplined. In the meantime, the trick is to propagandize rural voters so they vote themselves into oblivion by electing socialists.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s their propaganda game plan? In brief: hide, deny, re-identify, coopt, and speak \u201ccountry\u201d while selling their toxic product.<\/p>\n<h2>Hide: \u2018This Is Not the Radical You\u2019re Looking For\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>One obvious way Democrat candidates try to hide in red districts is by using the label <a href=\"https:\/\/yournews.com\/2026\/05\/15\/6968807\/democrats-turn-to-independent-candidates-in-red-states-as-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cindependent.\u201d<\/a> For example, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, a leftist running as an independent for county supervisor lost his close <a href=\"https:\/\/historical.elections.virginia.gov\/contest\/135591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 race<\/a> to a Republican. Then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2026\/09\/localimages\/image.jpg6ab11fe1536b9.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a hot mic Facebook post<\/a> he blamed the district\u2019s \u201cdeplorables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such candidates also hide behind traditional-sounding identities like \u201cveteran,\u201d \u201csmall business owner,\u201d \u201cfamily man,\u201d or, like Talarico, \u201creligious.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Deny: \u2018Whoa, Pardner, That\u2019s Not Me!\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>El-Sayed was caught <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/internet-erupts-over-disqualifying-leaked-audio-from-democrat-in-key-senate-race-discussing-khameneis-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on a hot mic<\/a> saying he couldn\u2019t praise the U.S. elimination of Iran\u2019s supreme leader without alienating \u201cmy constituency.\u201d He now says he\u2019s \u201cas American as anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed must also tip-toe around his past antisemitic remarks and adopt an air of contrition to neutralize their potential damage. For example, six months after he suggested that a terrorist attack on the Temple Israel in Detroit was justified, he offered an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/abdul-el-sayed-synagogue-attack-comments-apology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apology-not-apology<\/a> \u201cto anyone who feels like my comments might have been hurtful.\u201d Yet, even after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M1OI0CU2Qec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pronounced Jews<\/a> to be \u201ca light onto the world,\u201d he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/politics\/articles\/hasan-piker-albatross-el-sayed-204930753.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">failed to disavow<\/a> his ties to the brazen antisemite podcaster Hasan Piker.<\/p>\n<p>When Talarico served in the Texas legislature, he stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/robbys-radar\/6067024-texas-senate-candidate-woke-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">understanding<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/HD8EEb8zXIE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convergence<\/a> of white supremacy, capitalism, and climate change will help dismantle these evil institutions. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/texas-dems-proud-capitalist-pitch-collides-resurfaced-call-dismantle-capitalism\">no<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/texas-dems-proud-capitalist-pitch-collides-resurfaced-call-dismantle-capitalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">w<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/texas-dems-proud-capitalist-pitch-collides-resurfaced-call-dismantle-capitalism\">  proclaims himself<\/a> \u201ca proud capitalist.\u201d Like El-Sayed, Talarico is also trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/bI16JXdknlg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walk back<\/a> his previous statements that don\u2019t play well in Texas, such as claiming that Texas\u2019s \u201cdying\u201d oil and gas industry, which he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/01\/politics\/james-talarico-progressive-comments-kfile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compared<\/a> to the 1980s technology of cassette tapes, must be dismantled.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Democrat Senate candidate Dan Osborne in Nebraska, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2026\/09\/02\/democrat-backed-nebraska-candidate-senate-dan-osborn-audio-leak-trans-ice-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cI have people recording me, so I can\u2019t say I want to abolish ICE \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Re-identify: Communism in a Cowboy Hat<\/h2>\n<p>In 1968, people suffering under the vicious yoke of communism in Czechoslovakia pressed for \u201csocialism with a human face,\u201d a plea that ended with a Soviet invasion. As one DSA \u201crural organizer\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/partisanmag.com\/abolish-distinction-between-town-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cWe believe it is important to use religion where we can to agitate for a <a href=\"https:\/\/christiansocialism.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christian socialism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talarico\u2019s agitating consists in telling Texans that he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CollinRugg\/status\/1946305243287019941?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1946305243287019941%7Ctwgr%5E2e84467f4c8b4d945f205c237c52d78309c26b7d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthefederalist.com%2F2025%2F07%2F21%2Fno-matter-how-hard-democrats-try-there-is-no-such-thing-as-biblical-evidence-for-abortion%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hates Christianity<\/a>. Then he argues\u2014as a self-styled theologian\u2014that \u201cGod is non-binary,\u201d and the Bible has nothing to say about abortion or the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/videos\/lyman-cleaving-healthy-breast-tissue-off-children-is-inhumane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transing of children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The gospel according to James Talarico also states Christians must accept a government monopoly on health care <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/james-talarico-mark-cuban-healthcare-jesus_n_6a93adeee4b0b47f3d0c6a7d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">because<\/a> Jesus was \u201ca healer.\u201d According to the actual gospel, however, Jesus cured only one person among the multitude who sought healing at the pool of Bethsaida (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%205&#038;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John 5:1-15<\/a>). Jesus also pointed out the ingratitude of nine of the ten lepers He did heal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2017%3A16-17&#038;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luke 17:17<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristian socialism\u201d is nothing more than Satanic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/liberation-theology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">liberation theology<\/a> repackaged for elections, especially in rural America. During the 1960s, leftist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Gustavo-Gutierrez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catholic priests<\/a> in Latin America began pushing that Jesus-as-a-Marxist trope to build popular support for communist governments there.<\/p>\n<p>Can such absurd propaganda work? Maybe. A huge problem is the vast ignorance of American voters on matters of faith. Talk Different. Act Different\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>But how can the Democrats and the DSA frame the very narratives that rural Americans find so insupportable? The DSA \u201crural organizer\u201d cited above <a href=\"https:\/\/partisanmag.com\/abolish-distinction-between-town-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a> that the DSA simply \u201cdoes not know how to relate to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a DSA blog post from 2020 explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsausa.org\/blog\/5530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cHow to Organize Rural America<\/a>.\u201d It contains lots of pointers for DSA activists, such as contacting local allies, aiming for conversation, trying to be respectful, and more. For socialists, the purpose is to use deception to establish trust in order to push a socialist agenda forward.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, attracting rural voters after <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/02\/democrats-openly-declare-their-plans-to-infiltrate-rural-american-towns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">showing contempt<\/a> for them boils down to pretending you\u2019re \u201cone of them.\u201d The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruralurbanbridge.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rural Urban Bridge Initiative<\/a>, an advocacy organization aligned with Democrats, tells its activists to \u201cThink Different. Act Different,\u201d with a booklet called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/610d482f3b9e856192886fe1\/t\/6697eae9bc694d4d8b005ee5\/1721232106579\/RUBI+-+Talk+Like+a+Neighbor+-+V7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Talk Like a Neighbor<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats\u2019 concerns about rural voters have spawned a laundry list <a href=\"https:\/\/lareviewofbooks.org\/article\/how-democrats-can-win-back-rural-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of articles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dissentmagazine.org\/online_articles\/can-democratic-socialism-rise-in-rural-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analyses<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/politico-nightly\/2024\/02\/22\/they-surveyed-10-000-rural-voters-heres-what-they-learned-00142795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a>, and websites devoted to the activism they believe is necessary to turn things around for them. One of those groups, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralstrategies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Rural Strategies<\/a>, aims to influence rural voters with messaging strategies.<\/p>\n<p>These include podcasts from <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyyonder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Daily Yonder<\/a>, which focus on Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyyonder.com\/can-rural-voters-be-swayed-at-the-ballot-box\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talking points on issues such as housing<\/a>, public education, and health care, areas they believe rural voters are most swingable. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralassembly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rural Assembly<\/a> program aims at promoting \u201cdiversity\u201d and \u201cstorytelling\u201d propaganda in rural America. Other programs intended to connect with hearts and minds in rural America are its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralstrategies.org\/rural-faith-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rural Faith Initiative<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralstrategies.org\/living-traditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Living Traditions<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<h2>Could This Possibly Succeed?<\/h2>\n<p>Democrats\u2019 contempt for rural voters didn\u2019t keep them from pulling a recent <a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/https:\/www.electionreturns.pa.gov\/_ENR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upset win<\/a> in a statehouse district that voted overwhelmingly for President Trump in mostly rural Butler County, Pennsylvania. Journalist Salena Zito <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/4696652\/losing-campaign-pennsylvania-became-blueprint-democratic-upset-trump-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> that the August 18 special election serves as a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZitoSalena\/status\/2091694724771987895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blueprint<\/a> for Democrats who believe they can win more such races in deep red districts.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Both parties left Blair County knowing they would meet again in November. Their strategy involves a lot of propaganda and a lot of organizing, especially in races where low conservative turnout \u2014 in the Butler case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butlercountypa.gov\/812\/Current-Election-Returns#docaccess-380deb0d04d5aa67b7d613cd14ddfa40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32 percent<\/a> \u2014 can be overwhelmed by highly motivated leftists.<\/p>\n<p>This should be a wake-up call for rural voters. If they don\u2019t show up at the polls, they are paving the way to be ruled by people who hate them. The lesson is that no election should be taken for granted.
