The poll, conducted between September 3 and September 6, shows 59% of Democratic respondents identify as supporters of the DSA, which advocates for a radical socialist platform including drafting a new constitution, abolishing the Electoral College, and creating a socialist republic. The DSA also seeks too defund police and prisons, decriminalize migration, and end immigration enforcement agencies like ICE, aligning with positions widely held by mainstream Democrats such as Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton. Only a small minority of Republicans and Independents support such ideas. The support for socialism among Democrats signifies a shift towards radical policies, with many party leaders endorsing or championing measures that dismantle traditional institutions like the Constitution, border enforcement, and law enforcement agencies. This ideological alignment indicates that socialism is becoming the mainstream within the democratic Party, making it necessary for Democrats to define clear opposition to radical socialism to maintain moderate principles.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nearly 60 percent of Democrats support the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/committeetounleashprosperity.com\/hotlines\/democratic-voters-now-back-socialism-by-a-two-to-one-margin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a>, conducted between Sept. 3 and Sept. 6, asked respondents: \u201cOn political matters, do you consider yourself a supporter of the Democratic Socialists of America, or not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-nine percent of Democrats said \u201cyes,\u201d while just 30 percent said \u201cno.\u201d Two percent of Republicans said \u201cyes,\u201d while 96 percent of Republicans said \u201cno.\u201d Among independents, 22 percent said \u201cyes,\u201d and 70 percent said \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a concerning statistic, especially given what the DSA platform stands for.<\/p>\n<p>The DSA <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/17\/7-ways-dsa-plans-to-turn-america-into-a-third-world-communist-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released a new platform<\/a> in June that explicitly called for drafting \u201ca new constitution, and creat[ing] a democratic socialist republic.\u201d The organization also called for abolishing the Electoral College, as well as \u201creplac[ing] the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DSA is also pushing to \u201cdemilitarize police departments, disempower police unions, and redirect funding to public services as steps toward fully abolishing the police and prison system.\u201d The socialists want to abolish ICE, \u201clegalize migration, grant amnesty for all immigrants regardless of status, provide a path to citizenship for all permanent residents, and end visa caps and quotas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are now just 10 Democrats of more than 250 in Congress who have signed on to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepromisetoamerica.com\/signatories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coalition<\/a> that opposes rising socialism and communism. As part of their \u201cPromise to America,\u201d the 10 Democrats declare (among other things): \u201cWe are capitalist, not socialist,\u201d \u201cWe want safety, not lawlessness,\u201d \u201cWe are proud, not ashamed of America.\u201d That not <em>all<\/em> Democrats signed on to that in and of itself is concerning.<\/p>\n<p>The embrace of socialism \u2014 an extremist ideology \u2014 among mainstream Democrats both in office and in the electorate is the logical extension of Democrats\u2019 policies. As <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/29\/the-dsa-is-the-logical-conclusion-of-democrats-insane-anti-american-positions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I\u2019ve previously written<\/a>, the DSA isn\u2019t necessarily inventing any new ideas or positions. They\u2019re merely taking positions already embraced by much of the Democrat Party and just following them through to their logical conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>For example, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/434870-kamala-harris-says-she-is-open-to-abolishing-electoral-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4671719\/kamala-haris-abolish-electoral-college-expand-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">both<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvu.com\/news\/hillary-clinton-calls-for-abolishing-electoral-college-after-casting-electoral-vote-for-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> for the abolition of the Electoral College. Democrats have also supported the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would also abolish the Electoral College. Virginia\u2019s Democrat Gov. Abigail Spanberger recently committed Virginia to the unconstitutional pact as well.<\/p>\n<p>Or take immigration. Mainstream Democrats have long insisted that illegal aliens should have pathways to citizenship. Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KamalaHarris\/status\/855566787513122816?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a 2017 post on X that \u201can undocumented immigrant is not a criminal. \u2026 Give people a path to citizenship. The vast majority of folks we\u2019re talking about are living a lawful life and paying taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1765953197653279023?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared<\/a>: \u201cLet me be clear: No human being is illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DSA similarly argues \u201cno human is illegal,\u201d and the logical conclusion to this proposition is that there is no reason for ICE or deportations, which is exactly what the DSA is calling for. In other words, Democrat voters are already accustomed to this ideology because of mainstream Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The same pattern can be seen in Democrats\u2019 calls for defunding police and prisons or making housing a \u201cright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DSA openly pushes for what mainstream Democrats have been advancing gradually with language that is a bit more polished: destroying immigration enforcement and borders, dismantling police and prisons, and abolishing the Constitution as we know it.<\/p>\n<p>When 59 percent of Democrats describe themselves as DSA supporters, the socialists cannot be dismissed as a fringe faction hijacking an otherwise moderate party. Socialists are the party\u2019s voters, its candidates, and the logical conclusion of its agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats can keep pretending they are \u201cmoderate\u201d to win general elections (I\u2019m looking at you, Abigail Spanberger and James Talarico), but moderation requires more than just saying the word over and over again. It requires drawing a line and opposing radicals who want to explicitly get rid of the Constitution, end borders entirely, and end police. Yet today\u2019s Democrats \u2014 as evidenced by only 10 joining the aforementioned coalition opposing socialism \u2014 are unwilling to draw that line because they\u2019re already on the same side as the socialists.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
