The law,enacted in 2023,prohibits minors from accessing hormone treatments,puberty blockers,and surgeries. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) challenged the law, but the lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice after courts sided with Indiana, including a recent Supreme Court decision affirming states&#8217; rights to regulate such procedures. The court&#8217;s ruling emphasizes that policy questions should be left to democratically elected officials. experts note that gender-affirming care may have negative effects on children, such as infertility and bone density loss, and many minors tend to outgrow gender dysphoria by adulthood. pfTrackEvent(&#039;Court Upholds Indiana\u2019s Ban On \u2018Horrific\u2019 \u2018Trans\u2019 Surgeries For Kids&#039;); return false;\" title=\"Printer Friendly, PDF &#038; Email\">                     <span id=\"printfriendly-text2\" class=\"pf-button-text\"><i class=\"mdi mdi-printer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span>                     <\/a>                 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A federal court sided with Indiana on Friday in upholding a state law prohibiting \u201chorrific\u201d \u201ctrans\u201d surgeries from being conducted on children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have won this critical fight against radicals who would otherwise impose this horrific practice on our kids for ideological and financial reasons,\u201d Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita <a href=\"https:\/\/events.in.gov\/event\/massive-win-attorney-general-todd-rokita-celebrates-end-of-aclus-years-long-challenge-to-indianas-law-protecting-children-from-gender-transition-procedures?utm_campaign=widget&#038;utm_medium=widget&#038;utm_source=State+of+Indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cMy office will keep standing between our children and those who would sacrifice their health, innocence, and well-being on the altar of woke gender ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1006259405\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/image.subscription.in.gov\/lib\/fe2e11747364047b721071\/m\/1\/8c171a23-eb1b-4612-8c20-188dd1e10118.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">short order<\/a>, U.S. District Judge James Patrick Hanlon, a Trump appointee, entered final judgment in favor of the Hoosier State in a lawsuit brought by the left-wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/american-civil-liberties-union-aclu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)<\/a>. In doing so, he dismissed the leftist group\u2019s claims \u201cwith prejudice,\u201d meaning it cannot refile the same claims again in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wndu.com\/2023\/04\/05\/gov-holcomb-signs-bill-banning-gender-affirming-care-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local media<\/a>, the law in question was signed by former Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2023. Its provisions bar minors from <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >accessing harmful \u201chormone replacement therapies<\/a>, puberty blockers, and surgeries in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following its enactment, the ACLU sued in federal court challenging the law. After a lower court initially agreed to block the statute, an appeal from Rokita\u2019s office to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals resulted in that blockade being lifted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/events.in.gov\/event\/massive-win-attorney-general-todd-rokita-celebrates-end-of-aclus-years-long-challenge-to-indianas-law-protecting-children-from-gender-transition-procedures?utm_campaign=widget&#038;utm_medium=widget&#038;utm_source=State+of+Indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a> by the Indiana AG\u2019s office, the 7th Circuit again sided with Rokita in November 2024, \u201crevers[ing] the lower court, and [holding] that the law does not violate the Constitution.\u201d With no path forward, the ACLU reportedly \u201cabandoned the rest of the case,\u201d culminating in Friday\u2019s judgment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Supreme Court recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/18\/supreme-court-deems-laws-prohibiting-trans-surgeries-for-minors-as-constitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upheld<\/a> state laws protecting children from leftist-backed \u201ctrans\u201d experiments in its <em>U.S. v. Skrmetti<\/em> (2025) decision. Writing for the 6-3 majority, Chief Justice John Roberts held that such statutes do not violate the 14th Amendment and that \u201cquestions regarding the law\u2019s policy are thus appropriately left to the people, their elected representatives, and the democratic process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As The Federalist previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/10\/cleveland-clinic-agrees-to-end-trans-procedures-for-minors-for-20-years-in-doj-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, so-called \u201cgender affirming care\u201d has \u201cbeen shown to have extremely <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/09\/gender-affirmation-for-minors-is-child-abuse-not-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negative<\/a> effects on children,\u201d with data showing that \u201c[p]uberty blockers, for example, may cause future <a href=\"https:\/\/transcare.ucsf.edu\/guidelines\/fertility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infertility<\/a> and loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6616494\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bone density<\/a>.\u201d Many studies also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/10\/cleveland-clinic-agrees-to-end-trans-procedures-for-minors-for-20-years-in-doj-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show<\/a> that minors diagnosed with \u201cgender dysphoria\u201d are prone to grow out of it by the time they reach adulthood. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of U.S. states have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/lgbtq\/gender-affirming-care-policy-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> passed laws restricting practitioners from performing damaging \u201ctrans\u201d procedures on children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
