It emphasizes the intense emotions associated with these victims, often called “jumpers,” and explores the variations in their circumstances and the debates around appropriate terminology and media depiction. The article explains that at least 100 to 200 people fell from the towers, most from the North Tower, and clarifies that the victims were classified as homicide, not suicide, due to the horrific conditions they endured-temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The piece highlights the emotional and religious dilemmas faced by victims’ families, some viewing their loved ones’ deaths as a choice, while others see it as an unavoidable outcome of the terror and suffering. It describes various acts of desperation and bravery, such as victims attempting to escape using ropes or making parachutes, and others taking their own lives out of fear or hope for a quicker death. The article reflects on the importance of remembering these events fully, including showing graphic footage and images like “The Falling Man,” to honour the victims and confront the realities of that day. It urges society not to censor the tragedy but to acknowledge it openly, noting that remembering and understanding can motivate efforts to prevent future atrocities. The piece concludes with a call to honor the victims’ memory and the heroism shown during those moments, emphasizing the role of truthful remembrance in history.

More than the subsequent wars stemming from it, no part of September 11, 2001 produces more intense emotion than a discussion of the people who fell out the burning towers of the World Trade Center.

These victims are commonly called jumpers but are called that, akin to the term 9/11 as opposed to the longer and more powerful September 11, a simpler term rather than to truly describe the magnitude and multitude of what happened.

The strong emotions revolve around definitions of what to call the victims as well and their manner of death, as well as what constitutes proper taste in media.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Report on the World Trade Center Disaster Investigation combined with other sources document that at least 100, and more likely closer to 200 people fell out of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center; most from the North Tower and it started within just a few minutes of the first plane hitting the building.

Perhaps first and foremost, no one of the victims was classified as a suicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York (OCME) but as a homicide.
