She nearly needed smelling salts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/eScarry\/status\/2098396431505629499\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/eScarry\/status\/2098396431505629499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an interview Friday<\/a>, Paula Devlin, one of the witches on the jury who did vote to acquit Clancy of murdering her three children by reason of insanity, was asked by King to describe the demographics of her co-jurors. She said they ranged in age from their early 20s to \u201c70-ish,\u201d and, in that alien vernacular of self-conscious Democrats, she said there was just \u201cone person of color.\u201d The rest of the jurors, Devlin said, were white.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1518833289\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing how this was probably going to end, a cautious King proceeded to ask, \u201cWas the person of color a woman or a man?\u201d He was a man, Devlin said. You could almost hear the ominous saxophone-led soundtrack from early \u201990s TV dramas growing louder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs the holdout juror a person of \u2014\u00a0a black man?\u201d asked King in near disbelief. Devlin said he was. King asked again, to be sure. \u201cA black man is the holdout juror?\u201d Yes, Devlin said, looking every bit as dismayed as King.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhoa,\u201d said King, who was fortunately seated safely in a large cushioned chair, lest she had face planted. \u201cI have to sit with that for just a second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can\u2019t say with absolute certainty why King had to \u201csit with that for just a second,\u201d but recent events related to the Clancy case and the ultimate ruling of a mistrial offer some interesting clues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, this lone black male juror is the one whose peers in the trial complained <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/male-lindsay-clancy-juror-has-acknowledged-doubt-but-refuses-apply-note-says-12097339\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/people.com\/male-lindsay-clancy-juror-has-acknowledged-doubt-but-refuses-apply-note-says-12097339\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a note<\/a> to the judge that he wasn\u2019t following instructions by the court with regard to \u201creasonable doubt,\u201d suggesting that the juror was either unwilling or unable to do his duty. In essence, a room full of white people, ready to excuse a white woman for strangling her three young children, had grown frustrated with a black man who wouldn\u2019t conform and also excuse Clancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, Clancy\u2019s defense aggressively pleaded that the judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/09\/03\/lindsay-clancys-attorney-asks-judge-remove-juror\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/09\/03\/lindsay-clancys-attorney-asks-judge-remove-juror\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remove the one black man<\/a> \u2014 the only \u201cperson of color\u201d \u2014 from the otherwise all-white jury pool because he wasn\u2019t following along with what the white jurors had decided. What they had decided was to absolve a woman of responsibility for professing to have killed her own kids. You might say Clancy\u2019s defense tried to win the case through nullification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, after the judge declared a mistrial, several of the other white jurors publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/09\/lindsay-clancy-juror-most-of-us-were-able-to-get-over-the-dead-children\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/09\/lindsay-clancy-juror-most-of-us-were-able-to-get-over-the-dead-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disparaged<\/a> the holdout. Devlin, the same one interviewed by Gayle King, called him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/lindsay-clancy-trial-juror-interview-video\/4011169\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/lindsay-clancy-trial-juror-interview-video\/4011169\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cvery arrogant.\u201d<\/a> Another juror, Kellie Farina, faulted the single black juror for not \u201cgetting over the fact that Lindsay viciously killed her children.\u201d (To be sure, Farina said he \u201chad the hardest time getting over [it].\u201d) <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet another juror, Nick Dargie, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/curtishouck\/status\/2097820587838128540?s=46\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/curtishouck\/status\/2097820587838128540?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complained<\/a> with a straight face that the holdout wouldn\u2019t \u201cshow us evidence or \u2026 witness testimony that helped to prove what he was saying.\u201d (Presumably pointing to the three dead children who Clancy admits to killing by wrapping rubber exercise bands around their necks wasn\u2019t enough \u201cevidence\u201d for the holdout juror to \u201cprove what he was saying\u201d to the others.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This might account for at least some of the reason Gayle King needed to \u201csit with that for just a second\u201d when she found out that the holdout was a black man. For some people, it\u2019s a lot to take in.\u00a0Namely, white witches and warlocks who excuse the murder of children.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description
