The IEA cited several factors, including attacks by groups linked to the Houthis on ships transiting the Bab el-Mandeb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bab el-Mandeb is on the opposite side of the Arabian Peninsula from the Strait of Hormuz. Control over both waterways would give Iran further leverage over global energy supplies. Iran previously threatened it would close additional shipping routes with the help of its allies, namely the Houthis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 4.2 million barrels of oil and petroleum products passed through the Bab el-Mandeb each day during the first half of 2025, according to the Energy Information Administration. The outlet also reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called Trump twice to urge him to act before the Houthis gained more control.
