The farm says its goal is to provide a red meat alternative while helping keep family farmland in production.<\/p>\n<p>The idea started with Brent Williams, a co-founder who has the tick-borne allergy Alpha-gal syndrome, which can make eating red meat dangerous and potentially fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Alpha-gal syndrome happens after a tick bite exposes the body to the alpha-gal molecule, which some immune systems can interpret as a threat.<\/p>\n<p>People with the syndrome can have allergic reactions after eating mammal meat or being exposed to products containing alpha-gal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alpha-gal-syndrome\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC says more than 110,000 suspected cases were identified from 2010 through 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It estimates that as many as 450,000 people may be affected nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Most U.S. cases have been reported in the South, East, and Central states, where Lone Star ticks are common.<\/p>\n<p>Williams met co-founder W.D. King, and the two went into business together, he <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/kentucky-farm-raises-ostrich-as-red-meat-alternative-after-founder-developed-allergy-to-red-meat-from-tick-bite-exclusive-12111883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> People magazine.<\/p>\n<p>He described the ostrich meat they sell as landing somewhere between poultry and beef, and it has soared in popularity:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Falpharoostfarms%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0JAjmg3vZYKBK4NK2QkbQqisVpaqZRTmDq6d36mGexv86ki4vwrK4kFkTNQNXcBJXl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"678\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The farm markets ostrich as lean, high-protein meat with a flavor People described as \u201csimilar to steak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Its website says ostrich offers the rich flavor people want from steak while remaining naturally lean and high in protein.<\/p>\n<p>King, who raised cattle previously, told People, \u201cOstrich meat\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that one caveat of the meat is that it can become tough if overcooked.<\/p>\n<p>The farm mainly sells through local retailers, and the owners also enjoy selling directly to customers.
