The <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/19\/the-nevertrumpers-are-back-this-time-their-target-is-j-d-vance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">same folks<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/31\/the-burning-hatred-from-neocons-is-good-for-j-d-vance-in-2028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">find any excuse<\/a> to complain about Vice President J.D. Vance as the face of the \u201cwoke right\u201d are taking aim at a proposal that would make certain single income households helmed by married parents eligible for childcare subsidies typically handed to daycares.<\/p>\n<p>The current eligibility structure of the 30-year-old Child Care and Development Fund program is flawed and, like most welfare programs, susceptible to exploitation by <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/02\/09\/heres-where-prosecutors-should-look-for-more-evidence-of-somali-daycare-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fraudsters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/06\/16\/new-study-confirms-that-the-welfare-state-discourages-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moochers<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/2Ugdj#selection-4411.16-4411.47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$12 billion in taxes the daycare program<\/a> spends on subsidizing <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/2Ugdj\/https:\/\/acf.gov\/occ\/data\/child-care-and-development-fund-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unmarried working mothers<\/a> incentivizes out of wedlock births and outsourcing parenting duties, both inherently anti-conservative behaviors.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >existing tax code heavily subsidizes single motherhood<\/a> to the point that single moms who get married lose state support. In other words current law disincentives a social good (marriage) among welfare recipients. It simply redirects already-allocated funds, which Trump\u2019s HHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2026\/01\/05\/2025-24272\/restoring-flexibility-in-the-child-care-and-development-fund-ccdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tried to scale back<\/a>, to better align government spending with the Trump administration\u2019s pro-family goals and not discriminate against families with married parents on a single income. <\/p>\n<p>A small sliver of stay-at-home parents would actually qualify for the payout, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RealBrittHughes\/status\/2097307530313540055?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">knee-jerk reaction<\/a> from the think tank right was to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AngelaLMorabito\/status\/2097330418982809654?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vilify<\/a> those who want to raise their own babies as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ewerickson\/status\/2097500245718454459?s=46&#038;t=I7N1H1-oUXmNHfmubmtX-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cwelfare queens\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DLoesch\/status\/2096601015063642137?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201csocialist.\u201d<\/a> They claim they shouldn\u2019t have their hard-earned money <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/emzanotti\/status\/2096950200593965134?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cstolen\u201d<\/a> and handed to women who don\u2019t \u201corganize their lives so that they can work from home or provide for their families in a flexible manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ukraine-question-sparked-foreign-policy-shouting-match-at-gop-debate\/\" title=\"Ukraine query ignited foreign policy dispute at GOP debate.\">debate quickly shifted<\/a> from those spending complaints to claims that <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TianaTheFirst\/status\/2097357644470055418?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moms and dads both having to work<\/a> is actually a good thing and it\u2019s okay that tax dollars are currently used to subsidize that corporate framework. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">And there it is. Establishment GOP is telling us that moms prioritizing children and homemaking is no longer a possibility and you just need to accept that mothers are going to have to be in the workforce from here on out. But that\u2019s not on the table. The chances that Republicans will further risk re-election to go after the \u201csocial safety net\u201d are low and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/26\/house-republicans-agree-to-help-democrats-grow-the-welfare-state-and-shrink-the-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contra to history<\/a>. As I type, our GOP-controlled Congress sits in recess. This scheduled break comes just a few months before the midterms and after two years of legislators largely failing to move the needle in favor of the conservative voters who elected them.<\/p>\n<p>Pretending that Trump can put the CCDF on the chopping block tomorrow is a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GarrittHampton\/status\/2097018427604967732?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">false dilemma<\/a> that completely ignores the willingness and \u201cpower of the purse.\u201d The people arguing such are not simply being intellectually dishonest, they are further proving why conservatives have so much ground to make up in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>The welfare state is a scourge, but it\u2019s not going away anytime soon. Which is exactly why we have to harness it or risk losing it yet another very important cultural battlefield to the left. In the wild world of welfare, financially compensating married stay-at-home moms is the lesser of tax-funded evils. In fact, despite what the nasties online suggest, it\u2019s not an evil at all.<\/p>\n<p>Data shows that while \u201cone-earner families (whether the breadwinner is male or female) have <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/can-your-family-survive-on-one-income-public-policy-should-do-more-to-help-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fallen economically behind,\u201d<\/a> having a stay-at-home mom is good for the development and well-being of both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccfp.org\/ccfp\/raising-young-children-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">younger<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssb.no\/forskning\/discussion-papers\/_attachment\/113165?_ts=13ea1e1e480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">older<\/a> kids and boosts America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/07\/25\/american-birth-rates-rates-drop-to-levels-of-civilizational-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already-tumbling birth rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The only American families reproducing well above the replacement rate of 2.1 babies are those w\/ a married mom at home who works either part-time or not at all.&#8221; \ud83d\udc47\ud83c\udffd <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XGPcuDAR5d\">pic.twitter.com\/XGPcuDAR5d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brad Wilcox (@BradWilcoxIFS) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BradWilcoxIFS\/status\/2097424615781871743?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Data showing the differences in outcomes between children of working moms and stay-at-home moms is hard to find, we do know that homeschooled children, whose education requires an at-home parent <a href=\"https:\/\/nheri.org\/school-choice-a-reexamination-of-the-determinants-of-homeschooling-versus-public-and-private-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(mostly mom)<\/a>, are <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/073O5#selection-2527.35-2527.72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201chealthier, happier, more virtuous\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nheri.org\/home-school-researcher-religious-outcomes-in-conventionally-schooled-and-home-schooled-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less likely to engage in unsavory behaviors like illicit drugs, lying, and gambling<\/a> than their conventionally schooled peers.<\/p>\n<p>The facts is, children are better off if they are intentionally raised by their parents instead of a daycare, a nanny, and a government school. That\u2019s a hard thing for some people, especially women, to hear. After all, many conservative females have bought the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/06\/gop-girlbosses-who-claim-to-have-it-all-are-buying-the-same-old-feminist-lie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feminist-fueled lie<\/a> that they <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/03\/13\/women-cant-have-it-all-but-they-can-have-what-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can have a career and more<\/a> even though data shows they are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/09\/01\/study-having-a-husband-and-kids-doubles-womens-likelihood-of-being-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">happier<\/a> concentrating <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/03\/13\/women-cant-have-it-all-but-they-can-have-what-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prioritizing marriage and kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While American families with stay-at-home moms are <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/in-the-news\/stay-at-home-mom-model-hits-new-low\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the minority<\/a>, that isn\u2019t because women want to be in the workforce; it\u2019s because they have to be. According to a 2015 Gallup poll, a majority of mothers, <a href=\"https:\/\/gallup.com\/poll\/186050\/children-key-factor-women-desire-work-outside-home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">56 percent<\/a>, would prefer to be full-time \u201chomemakers\u201d instead of full-time employees. The working mothers who could find a way leave their jobs over the last few years <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/x1MAj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did so<\/a> in significant swaths.<\/p>\n<p>In the words of C.S. Lewis, \u201cChildren are not a distraction from more important work.\u00a0They are the most important work.\u201d Family is the foundation of civilization. The CCDF as is doesn\u2019t simply pose a threat to the security and stability offered by married parents, it encourages the opposite. Something has to give and it we can\u2019t let it be the foundation. <\/p>\n<p>If Wall Street Republicans have made anything clear over the last couple months, it\u2019s that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/09\/the-stay-at-home-parent-debate-is-gdp-first-vs-america-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GDP is God<\/a> and funneling tax dollars to separate children from their mothers is a good thing. The recent infighting was never about <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/10\/to-stop-gen-z-from-doordashing-make-the-cities-safer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$20 burritos<\/a> and cutting stay-at-home moms a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TPCarney\/status\/2097651144659026317?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meager<\/a> check that would otherwise go to subsidizing single motherhood.
