It details Michigan’s upset victory over Western Michigan, which was marred by questionable officiating and a disputed clock review. Despite clear on-screen evidence of the game ending before the final Michigan touchdown, the Big Ten conference justified their ruling with technical explanations, dismissing spectators’ and broadcasters’ observations. But for those interested in the integrity of America’s elections, the scene was all too familiar.

The controversy erupted following the conclusion of Michigan’s matchup against the Western Michigan Broncos. As is typical with many week one games, the match involved a bigger football school (Michigan) paying a smaller football school (Western Michigan) big bucks ($1.5 million) to play them at home.

The Wolverines were ranked No. 16 in the country heading into the game and were heavily favored to trounce the Broncos.

But that’s not what happened. Not at all.

The Broncos managed to hold the Wolverines to a single touchdown heading into the fourth quarter and subsequently racked up two field goals to put them ahead 12-7 with 35 seconds remaining. While Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood managed to move his team up to Western Michigan’s 47-yard-line, he only had 9 seconds left to get the ball in the end zone to bring home the win.

With little time left, Underwood did what any quarterback in that situation would do — he threw a Hail Mary to the end zone. As the ball came flying in, the clock ticked to zero, and then the pigskin landed in the hands of a Broncos player.

That was it. The little-known Broncos toppled one of college football’s premier programs in a massive upset to start the 2026 season — or so America thought.

As the Broncos’ bench ran onto the field to celebrate their major win, the refs reviewed the play and came back announcing there was 1 second left on the clock, which meant Michigan would be given a final chance to score. And score they did. With a 47-yard TD pass from Underwood, the Wolverines eked out the win.

Viewers and announcers alike were baffled. The game clock hit zero before the ball had even touched any of the players in the end zone. By every indication, that play should’ve ended the game.

Only hours later did the Big Ten (Michigan’s conference) come out and try to explain away the controversy. As described by Sports Illustrated, the league claimed that “all broadcast cameras tied to its replay system, including the one trained directly on the stadium game clock, are aligned using a strobe system 85 minutes before kickoff,” and “[t]hat process … is what let officials determine [the Broncos player] touched the ball before time actually expired” — even though the NBC broadcast showed the clock at zero when said player touched the ball.

Everyone knows what they saw. The broadcast and stadium clocks — the ones fans, announcers, players, and coaches all rely on — made clear that the game was over on Michigan’s first Hail Mary attempt. But the Big Ten seems content with essentially telling everyone, “Trust us. Don’t believe your lying eyes.”

It’s hard to fathom Western Michigan fans taking that argumentation well. Not that they should be expected to. The conference’s decision cost their team a historic victory and spared Michigan from a humiliating defeat.

But perhaps the crueler aspect of this entire debacle is that the game’s ending and how it’s been handled is no different from how many Democrats and their enablers treat America’s contested elections and those concerned about their integrity.

In the 2020 election, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg dumped hundreds of millions of dollars into left-wing nonprofits, which later siphoned those funds into election offices in heavily “blue” localities where they were used to advance Democrat-backed voting policies like mass mail-in voting. Leftist election officials in key battleground states circumvented their states’ respective legislatures by unilaterally changing election procedures regarding unsupervised practices such as the use of ballot drop boxes — another policy Democrats favor to boost their get-out-the-vote operations. And Big Tech companies like Facebook and Twitter eagerly censored the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story — which implicated his father and the family’s overseas business dealings — leading up to the election.

The influx of late-breaking ballots needed to deny outsider Spencer Pratt a spot on the general election ballot for Los Angeles’ mayoral race also left many people raising eyebrows about the integrity of the process.

Yet anyone who dared raise concerns about these problems was (and still is) immediately greeted with the same level of dismissiveness exhibited this past weekend.

Got questions about massive dumps of late-arriving ballots shifting the outcome of an election? You must be an election denier! Believe that the sporting officials tasked with managing the rules of the game should do so in an open and honest fashion? Congratulations, you’re a conspiracy theorist!

It all fits in the same box.

But whether it’s a sporting event or an election, fans and voters alike are entitled to transparency and fairness. When the systems in place deny people those things, the entities responsible for conducting these events should not be surprised when the people’s trust begins to wane.

Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
