Jon Ossoff and Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson highlight endorsements from politicians outside their own parties to appeal to undecided and independent voters. Ossoff emphasizes endorsements from Republican mayors, citing community-focused leadership, while Jackson promotes support from Democratic sheriffs, emphasizing public safety as a non-partisan issue. Political analysts suggest these strategies aim to sway independents who have historically split their votes.

This trend extends beyond Georgia, with Florida’s GOP gubernatorial candidate byron Donalds endorsing Democratic law enforcement officials, and Iowa’s democratic candidate Rob Sand garnering over 100 Republican endorsements, branding them as “Rob-Publicans” to showcase bipartisan support. In arizona, Democrat Kate Hobbs nominated a former Republican mayor as her running mate to broaden appeal.

Experts interpret these cross-party endorsements as efforts to distance candidates from polarized party brands, especially to attract disengaged and moderate voters. Nationally, this reflects a broader movement where politicians and candidates are challenging party orthodoxy on specific issues, signaling a desire to reduce partisan hostility and appeal to a wider electorate. The phenomenon is partly driven by public fatigue with toxic partisanship, prompting candidates to adopt more creative, bridge-building strategies in this election cycle.

Several 2026 political candidates in crucial battleground states have opted to lean into a cross-party appeal as they vie for voters beyond their party.

In Georgia, one of the nation’s closest-margin purple states in recent elections, both Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Republican gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson have made a point of touting endorsements from politicians outside of their own political party this year.

Recommended Stories

Candidates in purple states tout cross-party endorsements in appeal to marginal voters

Thune skips midterm convention speech as GOP leaders gather for election push

Raskin dismisses Hasan Piker’s pro-Hamas sentiment as ‘irrelevant distraction’

Ossoff has pointed toward several endorsements from Republican mayors in the Peach State who each signed onto his Senate reelection campaign citing the work he has done for their communities.
