The extended content contains a detailed discussion about the past references to Jesus Christ outside of the Bible. Key points include:

– The first-century Jewish-Roman historian Flavius Josephus mentioned Jesus in his work “Antiquitates Judaicae,” describing him as a miracle worker and teacher who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and stating that he appeared alive on the third day, leading to the formation of Christianity.

– Many scholars believe parts of Josephus’s account may have been embellished or added later, but his acknowledgment of jesus as a historical figure is uncontested.

– The Roman historian Tacitus also referenced Jesus, noting his death during Tiberius’s reign and linking the origins of Christianity to him.

– Other external sources like Thallus and geological studies support biblical accounts, such as darkness during Jesus’s crucifixion and earthquakes at the time of his death.

– The date of Jesus’s execution is often cited as Friday, April 3, AD 33.

– The Bible remains the most extensive source of information about Jesus’s life, with over 24,000 manuscript fragments, making it uniquely supported among ancient texts.

– Additional references and scholarly insights reinforce the historical evidence for Jesus outside biblical texts.

A passage written about the life of Jesus Christ by a famous historian of the era is one of several historical references to him outside of the Bible.

Flavius Josephus was a Jewish-Roman historian who wrote during the first century AD.

“His greatest work, Antiquitates Judaicae (The Antiquities of the Jews), completed in 20 books in AD 93, traces the history of the Jews from creation to just before the outbreak of the revolt of AD 66–70. It was an attempt to present Judaism to the Hellenistic world in a favourable light,” according to Britannica.

It contains references to Jesus, though Josephus was not a Christian.

In a recent “Blessed to Bless Project” video clip on YouTube about proof of Jesus outside of the Bible, the host read the most well-known passage in “Antiquitates,” regarding Jesus, saying it dated to 91 AD.

“At the same time there appeared in Judea an extraordinary person called Jesus, if it be lawful to call him a man. But that Josephus wrote about the historical person of Jesus is not in dispute.

In another passage in “Antiquitates,” the historian made a passing reference to Jesus when writing about the religious leaders of the time having his half-brother James stoned. That event is not recorded in the Bible.

The Bible Archaeology Report lists Josephus’s “Antiquitates” as No. 2 on its top 10 list of historical references to Jesus outside of the Bible.

Roman historian Tacitus is No. 1. He wrote about Jesus in his work “Annals” when discussing how Emperor Nero tried to deflect blame that he may have been responsible for the great fire of Rome in AD 64.

“Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace,” Tacitus wrote.

“Christus [i.e. Jesus], from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judæa, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular.”

Thallus, another historian on the Bible Archaeology Report list, is thought to be the first non-Christian to write about Jesus, circa AD 55. He is quoted by Julius Africanus around AD 220 to discuss the darkness that accompanied Jesus’ crucifixion.

“On the whole world there pressed a most fearful darkness; and the rocks were rent by an earthquake, and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened.
