The subpoenas, reportedly from the FBI, relate to Nevada\u2019s voter registration and maintenance practices. The office did not say what records the subpoenas sought or provide any further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DOJ requests come less than a month after the department lost its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3924612\/nevada-sued-by-government-for-voter-data\/\">civil case seeking Nevada\u2019s unredacted voter-registration list<\/a>, which included voters\u2019 names, addresses, dates of birth, driver\u2019s license numbers, and partial Social Security numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not immediately clear whether the records relate back to that litigation. The department has sued 29 states seeking similar information and has lost in 23 of its cases so far, while many remain under appeal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. District Judge Anne Traum, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.8newsnow.com\/news\/local-news\/federal-court-rules-for-nevada-in-lawsuit-seeking-access-to-unredacted-voter-registration-list\/\">dismissed<\/a> the case last month, ruling that Nevada did not have to provide its statewide voter-registration list under the Civil Rights Act of 1960. The DOJ<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/statedemocracy.law.wisc.edu\/our-work\/tracker-doj-lawsuits-seeking-states-sensitive-voter-data\"> appealed<\/a> the ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aguilar previously called the department\u2019s request for voter information an attempt \u201cto intimidate us into turning over protected voter data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DOJ previously said in its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/media\/1420731\/dl\">complaint<\/a> that it sought the records to assess Nevada\u2019s compliance with voter-list maintenance requirements under federal law.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevada has also disputed President Donald Trump\u2019s recent claim that as many as 15,903 noncitizens could be registered to vote in the state. Homeland Security officials<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/08\/25\/nx-s1-5940807\/noncitizen-voters-trump-nevada-call\"> said<\/a> last month they had identified 185 potential noncitizens, although they referred to the larger figure as a possible \u201cceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The subpoenas put Nevada alongside other battleground states where the FBI has sought election records this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, FBI agents used a search warrant to seize more than 600 boxes of ballots and election records from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fulton-county\/\">Fulton County<\/a>, Georgia, as part of an investigation into alleged irregularities in the 2020 election.
