Historically, the average has never exceeded $4. per gallon. The sharp increase is linked to geopolitical tensions, notably the conflict involving iran and issues surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, and elevated crude oil prices currently in the $90 range. Prices rose from $3.86 in june to over $4.19 in August.

President Donald Trump, who had previously campaigned on lowering gas prices and achieved a five-year low of $2.79 in January, now faces the challenge of rising costs. Recently, he announced a major oil deal with Venezuela, acquiring 65 billion barrels of oil, which he claims will significantly boost U.S.reserves, increase supply, and lower prices. Gas prices also vary regionally, with California having the highest average at $5.81 per gallon and Indiana the lowest at $3.45. The upcoming record-high prices for Labor Day highlight the ongoing geopolitical and economic influences on fuel costs.

The national average price for regular gas continues to rise on Friday, reaching $4.15 per gallon, according to AAA. It is an increase from a week ago, and also a month ago, when regular gas was $4.09 per gallon. If gas prices remain at the current level, they will set a record high for fuel costs on Labor Day. The previous record from Sept. 3, 2012, was $3.82 per gallon. According to AAA, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas has never exceeded the $4 per gallon price point in the country’s history.

Barring significant unforeseen circumstances and a rapid decrease in fuel costs, the record-high gas prices for Labor Day will be a dubious distinction for President Donald Trump, who campaigned on lowering gas prices nationwide.
