During his campaign, Mamdani gained a following through a volunteer-led group called “Creators4Zohran.” His governance subsequently created a Signal chat group of influencers who receive press updates and talking points from the mayor’s team, who then choose what to post. Although these influencers are not paid directly by the city for their coverage, some are compensated for specific messaging campaigns through contracts with marketing agencies paid by taxpayer money. Director of New Media Emilia Rowland, earning $175,000 annually, organizes these influencer activities. The city’s influencer campaigns typically cost between $5,000 and $20,000 each. The Columbia journalism Review reports that details of these relationships are kept confidential, with records and contracts not publicly disclosed. Mamdani has stated his administration aims to be obvious and compliant with legal requirements regarding record-keeping and influence campaigns. He emphasized the importance of directly communicating with New Yorkers across various media platforms.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has reportedly cultivated ties with about 200 online content creators as his communications team works to spread his policy message through social media platforms.

Mamdani, known for his social media prowess during his 2025 mayoral election, grew a following during his campaign through a “volunteer-led” group that calls itself “Creators4Zohran,” which posts in support of the mayor.
