Her 1969 essay, \u201cAfter Black Power, Women\u2019s Liberation,\u201d further cemented her role as a leading voice in the emerging women\u2019s movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLiberation isn\u2019t exposure to the American values of Mom-and-apple-pie anymore \u2026 it\u2019s the escape from them,\u201d she <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/news\/politics\/46802\/\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1971, Steinem co-founded <em>Ms. Magazine<\/em>, which initially appeared as an insert in New York magazine before becoming an independent publication. The magazine quickly became an influential platform for the women\u2019s movement. They view the home as a prison, and the wife and mother as a slave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steinem challenged traditional expectations surrounding marriage and relationships in her own life.\u00a0For years, she joked about her decision to remain unmarried, famously saying, \u201cI can\u2019t mate in captivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in 2000, at 66, Steinem married David Bale, the father of actor Christian Bale. The marriage was short-lived as Bale died of lymphoma three years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked later why she had changed her mind about marriage, Steinem rejected the idea that her views had changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t change. Marriage changed,\u201d she told <em>National Geographic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I had married when I was supposed to get married, I would have lost my name, my legal residence, my credit rating, many of my civil rights,\u201d she added. \u201cThat\u2019s not true anymore. It\u2019s possible to make an equal marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steinem was also deeply involved in electoral politics. In 1971, she co-founded the National Women\u2019s Political Caucus, an organization focused on increasing the number of women in elected and appointed office.
