At the behest of the Democrat-controlled state legislature, workers removed the statues of Gen. Thomas \u201cStonewall\u201d Jackson, Gov. William \u201cExtra Billy\u201d Smith, and Dr. Hunter H. McGuire, all of whom served the Confederacy during the Civil War, from Capitol Square in Richmond.<\/p>\n<p>This is a familiar story for those who care about our country\u2019s history. Over the last decade, statues of Confederates, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/conormurray\/2026\/04\/25\/trump-administration-reinstalls-statue-of-founding-father-removed-during-2020-racial-reckoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/24\/us\/thomas-jefferson-statue-removed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Founding Fathers<\/a>, have been removed all across the country. Virginia, <em>the<\/em> Civil War mecca, the focal point of some of the most consequential and dramatic events of that conflict, has been hit the worst. The twin tumors of Richmond and the D.C. suburbs have seen to the utter devastation of the Old Dominion\u2019s Civil War heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Leftists\u2019 jihad against history \u2014 whether carried out by government decree or at the hands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice\/2020\/06\/11\/874565394\/protesters-topple-jefferson-davis-statue-in-richmond-va\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enraged George Floyd-era rioters<\/a> \u2014 has virtually stripped bare Richmond\u2019s Monument Avenue, once home to monuments dedicated to Gen. Robert E. Lee, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and other major Confederate leaders. The only statue still remaining on the no longer aptly named Monument Avenue is one to tennis player Arthur Ashe.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all the promises by the state government that the statues will be moved to appropriate museums and battlefields, we\u2019ve seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pics\/comments\/17hmnud\/the_face_of_robert_e_lee_as_a_bronze_of_the\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what they do to them<\/a> once they\u2019re out of the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>To add insult to injury, earlier this year Democrat Gov. Abigail Spanberger <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/5831524-virginia-confederacy-tax-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed a bill<\/a> that removes tax exemptions from Confederate heritage organizations, most notably the United Daughters of the Confederacy.<\/p>\n<p>The removal of Confederate statues isn\u2019t about \u201ccorrecting the historical record\u201d or \u201cremoving the stain of racism.\u201d The activists who call for the removal of Confederate statues quickly move on to those of the founders once their demands are initially met. They\u2019re hostile to all of American history, not just that of the Confederacy.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not rushing to replace Confederate statues with ones of Winfield Scott or George Thomas, Virginians who served the Union during the war. Because the complete devastation of history, not the accurate representation of it, is the point. They don\u2019t really care who was on which side of the Civil War, or how <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/31\/communists-destroy-statues-then-people-in-virginia-theyre-running-out-of-confederate-statues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complicated<\/a> views on slavery were in the antebellum South. Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/abraham-lincoln-black-resettlement-haiti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in the North<\/a>, for that matter. Because far-left activists see them as all evil, white oppressors. One side just happens to be easier to attack with the modern political kiss of death: the accusation of racism. But they plan on coming for all of American history eventually; you can see that in how they\u2019ve gone after Founding Fathers who owned slaves, because leftists fundamentally hate America, its history, and its particular people.<\/p>\n<p>  It\u2019s about power, and it\u2019s about breaking down classical American identity to make way for a new one \u2014 one built on identity politics and Marxist grievances. Leftists want to wipe out the culture and heritage of the only real American and reliably conservative part of the country left: the South (and the Mountain West too, hence the grievance politics around American Indians). They\u2019ve largely succeeded, both through replacement with immigrants and through the same tactic of \u201chistorical revision,\u201d on the West Coast and the Northeast. <\/p>\n<p>Southern states tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/09\/16\/how-religious-is-your-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more religious<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/203204\/wyoming-north-dakota-mississippi-conservative.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more conservative<\/a> in general than the rest of the country. The South stands as the bastion of the Republican Party, that is, the bulwark against the left\u2019s designs to fundamentally transform this country. Therefore, to the left, the South is evil, the embodiment of the nation\u2019s sins, both past and present. Southerners are routinely portrayed and dismissed as backward, superstitious racists who must be reeducated about \u201creal\u201d American history.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to see the perfect illustration of how the left sees American history, look no further than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/17\/los-angeles-confederate-monuments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the fate<\/a> of the equestrian statue of Stonewall Jackson from Charlottesville, Virginia. Removed in 2021, the statue was handed over to a California nonprofit organization that promised to utilize the statue for \u201ctransformation, not further veneration.\u201d They kept that promise all too well. \u201cArtist\u201d Kara Walker \u201cbutchered,\u201d as described approvingly by the exhibit\u2019s curator, the statue into a twisted pile of junk that looks more like debris from a bombing run than anything a normal person would describe as art.<\/p>\n<p>To them, it\u2019s not something to be held up with anything approaching reverence, but something to be mutilated and molded into something intentionally grotesque to deride the past and humiliate anyone who still reveres history. For the left, it\u2019s not about taking something distasteful and creating meaningful or beautiful new art from it; it\u2019s about the destruction of the old piece of art. That in itself is the political message when they tear down statues: We have the power and the will to destroy this piece of history, and you can\u2019t do anything about it. If allowed to go unchecked, the left will tear down all of American history and twist it into something unrecognizable.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve already done it in schools: twisting an inspiring story about a people carving a new civilization out of untamed wilderness into one of racism, exploitation, and environmental degradation. Now the real, concrete symbols of our history must go, lest they remind anyone that national reconciliation, even after so much bloodshed, is possible when people share a common culture and religion or that America has heroes worth venerating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonuments, as I\u2019ve always said, they\u2019re symbols,\u201d Democrat State Sen. Mike Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvr.com\/news\/local-news\/richmond\/removing-confederate-statues-capitol-square-aug-28-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> of the removal on Aug. 28. \u201cThey point to something beyond themselves. Is this what the Commonwealth is about? Is this where we want to direct people to? And it\u2019s not. We have the moniker, the mantra, \u2018Virginia is for Lovers.\u2019 Well, hey, let\u2019s prove that in how we legislate and also how we look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though \u201cVirginia Is For Lovers\u201d may look good on the state\u2019s tourism ads, the official state motto, \u201cSic Semper Tyrannis,\u201d has a far more pertinent meaning to our current political atmosphere. It\u2019s Latin for \u201cThus always to tyrants,\u201d and it\u2019s a motto the state of Virginia has failed to live up to as it has been slowly but surely taken over by rabid leftists.<\/p>\n<p>Monuments are indeed symbols. They indicate which individuals and which values from our past we as a particular people hold worthy of public honor. The left doesn\u2019t try to replace the statues, but instead merely tears them down, because leftists don\u2019t see any previous Americans or the values that they stood for as worthy of public honor. They hate and wish to destroy America\u2019s heritage and identity, and Southern heritage and identity in particular, as a means of destroying America itself.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Hayden Daniel is a staff editor at The Federalist.
