Edwards, who had dropped his re-election bid after the report’s release, was censured for failing to adhere to rules against sexual harassment and unwanted advances. Despite the committee’s findings of inappropriate behavior, Edwards claimed his conduct was misunderstood and defended his actions as friendly. The report detailed him inviting staffers to dinner, gifting them, and discussing strip clubs, but his campaign denied any violations of federal sexual harassment laws. Edwards also composed a lengthy letter arguing his innocence, but it did not prevent the censure. This action follows a history of congressional penalties, with previous censures and expulsions, and occurs amid multiple resignations of lawmakers facing misconduct allegations.

The House voted Tuesday afternoon to censure Rep.
