Sixty-eight percent of voters who didn\u2019t participate in Republican or Democratic primaries said the convention would not have much of an impact or no impact at all.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results shared exclusively with <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> come before the full poll is released on Wednesday to the general public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and Vice President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jd-vance\/\">JD Vance<\/a> are the keynote speakers for the two-night convention scheduled for Sept. 9 and Sept. 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are defending their slim majority in the House and Senate this November, as Democrats hope to snatch back control of at least one chamber of Congress. But they face headwinds as the Iran war has crossed the six-month mark, and gas prices have not returned to prewar levels.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Texas, a marquee Senate battle between state Attorney General <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ken-paxton\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"4370\">Ken Paxton<\/a> and Democrat <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/james-talarico\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"17710\">James Talarico<\/a> will be a barometer of whether Democrats have any modicum of a chance of flipping the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans say that Talarico\u2019s past comments, such as saying that God is nonbinary, prove he is unfit to succeed Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) as the Lone Star State\u2019s next senator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJames Talarico has extreme positions, such as declaring there are six genders,\u201d said Anthony Holm, a veteran GOP strategist and former Paxton spokesman. \u201cAnd an earned media event, such as a midterm convention, is going to shine a spotlight on Talarico\u2019s beliefs that are so far outside the norm it will be the beginning of the end of the Talarico campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talarico later said he \u201cmissed the mark\u201d in his past comments in an interview with CBS News in May. \u201cThere are some statements that I\u2019ve made that I certainly regret,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cThere are statements that I\u2019ve made where I\u2019ve missed the mark. I\u2019ll be the first to admit that. But Ken Paxton is intentionally clipping my cringey comments to distract from his career of corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polling from the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/texaspolitics.utexas.edu\/blog\/new-ut-texas-politics-project-poll-finds-talarico-leading-paxton-abbott-leading-hinojosa-continued-resistance-to-data-centers-2\">University of Texas\/Texas Politics Project <\/a>showed 42% of Texans preferred Talarico to the 39% who preferred Paxton. Talarico also has a sizable fundraising advantage over Paxton. The latest Federal Election Commission reports showed Talarico raising $31.6 million compared to Paxton\u2019s $9.3 million in the second quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RNC Chairman Joe Gruters\u00a0has said the convention will be a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4644251\/gop-fundraise-midterm-convention\/\">\u201cTrump-a-palooza\u201d\u00a0themed event<\/a>, but Republicans have privately fretted over the high cost of attendance, with some states charging tens of thousands of dollars for special access, and that the event will compete with opening night of the NFL season.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">National Republicans, however, remain confident that the convention will boost the party in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Midterm Convention is an opportunity for Republicans to rally behind President Trump\u2019s policies that have cut taxes, lowered drug costs, and secured our border,\u201d RNC national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre said in a statement. \u201cRepublicans will continue to deliver results, but Democrats will revert to open borders, abolishing the police, and implementing the radical policies voters already rejected. There\u2019s a choice between commonsense or crazy, and we need every Republican to vote to protect our commonsense majorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A local Republican also told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that they believe the convention will help the GOP as it tries to overcome Trump\u2019s sagging approval numbers and voter dissatisfaction with the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do believe the midterm convention can have a meaningful impact, particularly when it comes to motivating Republican activists and energizing the grassroots,\u201d said Joseph Vargas, a Texas GOP strategist and founder of the Keep Texas Red\u00a0podcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConventions themselves do not automatically translate into votes, but they can inspire and motivate people who are already politically engaged,\u201d Vargas also said. \u201cThat inspiration can then turn into energetic blockwalking, voter outreach, volunteer recruitment, and better organization at the local level. When that happens, it can absolutely influence voter turnout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hans Klingler, a former spokesman for the Texas GOP, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that \u201cNo one does a Republican convention like Texas Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4700367\/what-to-know-rnc-republican-midterm-convention\/\">WHAT TO KNOW AS TRUMP AND VANCE HEADLINE FIRST-EVER GOP MIDTERM CONVENTION<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been fortunate enough with 40 years in Texas politics to be a part of and help lead several of them. Adding President Trump and his team to that already successful track record will put it on steroids,\u201d Klingler added. \u201cEvery candidate and office holder in Texas knows what this mid-cycle convention will do to our base \u2026 from Paxton to the local candidates \u2026they are going to be fired up to get out and make sure Republicans win on Nov. 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Overton Insights and Texas Public Policy Foundation poll was conducted Aug. 24 to Aug. 26 and has a plus or minus 2.9% margin of error.
