Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0would be the first female president and the youngest commander in chief if she were sworn into office in January 2029. She would be the second president elected from the House since James Garfield triumphed in 1880.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an exasperating decade-plus of fighting Trump, these skeptical Democrats want to maximize the chances of winning in two years, and the New York lawmaker represents too much risk. Haunted\u00a0by Clinton\u2019s and Harris\u2019s defeats, some high-level Democrats privately want a white, male governor to be their 2028 standard-bearer, and there will be plenty of options in that space.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">Rev. It suggests she is looking to moderate her positions to make her palatable to independents who usually decide general election contests for the White House.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2026\/07\/20\/backstage-with-aoc-in-michigan-01004744\">a July interview<\/a> with <em>Politico<\/em> Playbook, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0said, \u201cI come from a working-class family. I didn\u2019t come from a militant leftist family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4662432\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-democratic-socialists-america-abolish-senate\/\">recently distanced herself<\/a> from the insurgent Democratic Socialists of America in comments to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, rejecting the movement\u2019s call to eradicate the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the DSA is to Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s left, she represents its best hope to reform policy and politics as the next president. There will be other very liberal candidates, such as Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), vying for the nomination, but none will have the star power of Ocasio-Cortez. And it is a good bet Sanders would return the favor and endorse Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0after she backed his prior White House runs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the extreme Left will probably not be embracing governors such as Josh Shapiro (D-PA), Andy Beshear (D-KY), or JB Pritzker (D-IL). Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is a possibility, but liberal activists criticized a number of his moves as governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0could challenge Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for the Senate in 2028 instead of running\u00a0for president. (And she has the ability to first run for president and\u00a0then later opt to launch a Senate bid). But as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2026\/08\/12\/aoc-president-2028-she-may-never-have-better-chance\/\">Henry Olsen recently wrote<\/a> in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, the time is now for Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0to run for the White House. The rise of DSA and Sanders\u2019s acknowledgment that he is too old to run opens up a huge opportunity for Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-hunter-biden-says-aoc-is-the-future-of-the-democratic-party\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hunter Biden says AOC is the \u2018future\u2019 of the Democratic Party<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter Biden, who <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/entertainment\/4701149\/where-is-hunter-biden-launches-substack-column-podcast-speaks-to-recovering-addicts\/\">appears to be making<\/a> somewhat of a political comeback, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/FkYKYyuv1TU\">recently lauded Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>, stating, \u201cI look at her \u2026 and I see the future of the Democratic Party in every way.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that she \u201chas an instinct to find common ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yemisi Egbewole, a senior fellow at the center-left Third Way, said Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0will have to go beyond comments about \u201cWoke 1\u201d and moderate some of her positions to appeal to a broader swath of Democratic voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe has to budge on policy,\u201d Egbewole told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, specifically citing public safety and law enforcement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be no shortage of Democrats running in 2028, with estimates ranging from a dozen to 20 major candidates. Those numbers will help Ocasio-Cortez, just like the crammed 2016 GOP primary helped Trump nab the nomination. Like Trump, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0could win a fair amount of states with 30%-40% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0former bartender and waitress is off to a good start as the chatter about her future intensifies. Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/aoc-surges-past-buttigieg-leaves-harris-dust-key-2028-battleground-poll\">told Fox News that<\/a> \u201cnearly\u00a0half of socialists and one-third of progressives support Ocasio-Cortez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic rivals to Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0might attack her support for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4662432\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-democratic-socialists-america-abolish-senate\/\">her lack of foreign policy experience<\/a>. But that could backfire. They would more likely claim she can\u2019t win a general election \u2014 just like the Democratic establishment that favored Clinton and Biden repeatedly said there was little chance Sanders could beat Trump in the general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a clear pattern of pragmatism in Democratic presidential primaries, and that could seriously hurt Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s chances. Then-Sen. John Kerry got the nod as the 2004 nominee because he was seen as the best candidate to defeat then-President George W. Bush. In 2020, primary voters catapulted Joe Biden because of his electability.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-aoc-s-choice-white-house-or-senate\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AOC\u2019s choice: White House or Senate?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Press, a progressive media pundit who has long been friends with Sanders, has serious doubts about an Ocasio-Cortez presidential run: \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any way she would win the nomination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former head of the California Democratic Party said he has talked to a lot of female Democrats who feel \u201cburned\u201d by the losses by Clinton and Harris. These voters, Press said, \u201cdon\u2019t want to roll the dice\u201d on Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her best move, Press told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, would be to take on Schumer in 2028. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s hers for the taking,\u201d Press said, adding that a promotion to the Senate would make her \u201ca bigger rock star\u201d and give her the opportunity to grow her legislative accomplishments. A presidential run from a Senate perch could come later, he added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-moving-left-to-center-is-not-easy-in-a-democratic-presidential-primary\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moving left to center is not easy in a Democratic presidential\u00a0primary <\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egbewole said it is easier politically for a centrist Democrat to move left in a presidential primary than for a progressive candidate to shift to the center. If she tries to abandon liberal policies, Egbewole said, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0will draw criticism because \u201cthe far Left is unforgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DSA officials are already ripping Ocasio-Cortez <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/30\/socialists-fight-aoc-2028\">behind the scenes<\/a>, <em>Axios<\/em> reported, and those admonishments are only going to grow if she strays from her left-wing roots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she first ran for the House, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0ran against the New York establishment and stunned then-Rep. Joe Crowley, who was eyeing the speaker\u2019s gavel. If she runs for president, she would run a populist campaign against the Washington establishment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was speculation she would challenge Schumer in 2022, but she wisely opted not to. Schumer was extremely powerful at the time, and few could go toe-to-toe with his political operation. Now, Schumer would probably rush to endorse his New York colleague as a presidential candidate for two reasons: He wouldn\u2019t have to face her, and he needs to shore up his left flank if, as expected, he runs for reelection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is hard to imagine Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0not running for the Senate or White House in 2028. The Bronx native said six years ago that she <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/523229-ocasio-cortez-says-she-doesnt-plan-on-staying-in-the-house-forever\/\">\u201cdoesn\u2019t plan on staying in the House forever.\u201d<\/a> And in a recent appearance on ABC\u2019s <em>This Week<\/em>, she didn\u2019t rule out a bid for higher office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she ran for the House in 2018, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0was counted out by the media. But that didn\u2019t shake her confidence.\u00a0In the Netflix documentary <em>Knock Down the House<\/em>, which\u00a0tracked her first campaign eight years ago, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0said, \u201cIf we\u2019re good enough, we\u2019ll win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She subsequently vanquished Crowley by 13 percentage points, though her\u00a0victory was powered by fewer than 17,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0has deftly kept her anti-establishment reputation while shifting away from being the raucous rebel of her first couple of terms. For example, she has not endorsed a primary challenge against any Democratic incumbent running for reelection this cycle as the DSA has taken out longtime members. Still, she, like Sanders, has been busy on the campaign trail this year. She elevated Abdul el Sayed in his Senate Democratic primary, endorsing him a month before he defeated Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI).\u00a0In her home state, Ocasio-Cortez aided now-New York Mayor Zohran Mandani in June 2025 by endorsing him over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she came to Congress, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0irritated then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) but has since <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4683437\/nancy-pelosi-biden-public-cognitive-tests-aoc-newsom-praise\/\">gotten back into her good graces.<\/a> (Pelosi is expected to endorse Newsom if he runs.)<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-would-aoc-play-in-south-carolina\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How would AOC play in South Carolina?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats have again blessed South Carolina as the first primary contest in 2028, and that could be a tough state for Ocasio-Cortez. Black voters tend to be more centrist, and Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), a kingmaker in the state, is unlikely to endorse his House colleague. Clyburn, 86, has said the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement hurt the Democratic Party and cost it seats in prior elections. Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0initially embraced the slogan but has since backed away from it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s policy positions are outside the mainstream, and that has contributed to an approval rating that is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/harvardharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/HHP_Jul2026_KeyResults.pdf\">6 points underwater.<\/a> Yet, presidential contests are arguably decided more on personality than policy. While some Democrats maintain they don\u2019t necessarily need a huge personality in 2028 \u2014 Biden said he would be a boring president when he ran six years ago \u2014 solid, but unspectacular candidates usually lose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love her or hate her, Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0is not boring.
