Jones condemns women like Karoline Leavitt for leaving high-profile roles to spend more time with their children, implying that this reflects a restrictive view of femininity and reinforcing stereotypes about women\u2019s desires.The author counters that many women prefer to focus on what truly matters-family and motherhood-and that they are not compelled by societal or corporate pressures to conform to a work-centric identity. The piece argues that the so-called &#8220;problem&#8221; with women in conservative circles is based on misconception and that women\u2019s choices to prioritize family are valid and beneficial. It also defends the idea that women\u2019s roles are diverse and that respecting these choices is essential, contrasting Jones&#8217;s dismissive attitude with a broader view that values women\u2019s autonomy and the importance of motherhood.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Intelligencer\u2019s Sarah Jones is a mean girl. <\/p>\n<p>Over the last few months, the senior New York writer has <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/author\/sarah-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blathered<\/a> about \u201cThe Relentless Fantasy of the Tradwife\u201d and finger-wagged women about fertility, pregnancy, and marriage (\u201ctrue love isn\u2019t necessarily a sign of progress for heterosexuals or anyone else,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/PvQ1R#selection-1691.70-1691.149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she insists<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Her August 29 article <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/karoline-leavitt-the-right-woman-problem.html#comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Right\u2019s Woman Problem,\u201d<\/a> is no different. In it, Jones throws jabs at conservative heroine Phyllis Schlafly, Secretary of War wife Jennifer Hegseth, Trump aide Natalie Harp, and former Department of Government Efficiency adviser Katie Miller for their roles as \u201creactionary young mother[s who] will always have some value to the right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the real focus of her fire is Karoline Leavitt for her \u201cbinary view of motherhood\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jordanboydtx\/status\/2087630451854676391?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">daring to leave her post<\/a> as White House press secretary in favor of spending more time with her toddler and new baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the women of the White House, power still comes with a tradeoff. Their roles hinge not only on their competence, or their commitment to Trump, but their compliant femininity,\u201d Jones complains. <\/p>\n<p>This so-called \u201ccompliant femininity,\u201d Jones suggests, is not limited to the president\u2019s workplace. According to her, it\u2019s part of a widespread notion on the right \u201cthat women are pre-rational creatures controlled by their wombs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConservatives have always let women into the vanguard on a conditional basis,\u201d she writes. \u201cA right-wing woman earns some status by conforming to gender norms, and she often finds the most professional traction by defending her own subordination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The right <em>does<\/em> have a woman problem, one that we at The Federalist have diagnosed and repeatedly analyzed. But, unlike Jones\u2019 assertions, the problem is not that women and men are wired differently or even that life generally requires tradeoffs. The real problem is that many conservative women have bought the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/06\/gop-girlbosses-who-claim-to-have-it-all-are-buying-the-same-old-feminist-lie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feminist-fueled lie<\/a> that they <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/03\/13\/women-cant-have-it-all-but-they-can-have-what-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can and should have it all<\/a>, when all signs suggest they are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/09\/01\/study-having-a-husband-and-kids-doubles-womens-likelihood-of-being-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">better off \u2014 happier, even \u2014<\/a> concentrating <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/03\/13\/women-cant-have-it-all-but-they-can-have-what-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on what actually matters<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that American families with stay at home moms are <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/in-the-news\/stay-at-home-mom-model-hits-new-low\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">officially the minority<\/a>, but, contrary to Jones\u2019 implications, that isn\u2019t because women would prefer to spend their days wasting away in a high-rise cubicle. Much to the chagrin of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/x1MAj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Post<\/a> and probably Jones, a significant percentage of working moms with young children acted on their desires to stay home and left the workforce over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>Data from a decade ago foreshadowed this exodus. According to a 2015 Gallup poll, a majority of mothers, <a href=\"https:\/\/gallup.com\/poll\/186050\/children-key-factor-women-desire-work-outside-home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">56 percent<\/a>, would prefer to be full-time \u201chomemakers\u201d instead of full-time employees. Among childless women, that number tumbled to 39 percent. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving children under the age of 18 is a key factor in whether women would prefer to be employed or stay home, while their current employment status matters relatively little,\u201d Gallup determined.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that motherhood fundamentally changes women. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/05\/22\/hailey-biebers-vogue-cover-story-confirms-motherhood-changes-women-for-the-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebs<\/a> and chronically online moms touting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/08\/19\/1117753535\/quiet-quitting-work-tiktok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cquiet quitting\u201d<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebump.com\/a\/quiet-quitting-parenting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trend<\/a> recognize life is not defined by happy hours, working weekends, and the \u201cclimb the ladder\u201d careerism sold to college-educated females if it means forsaking time and snuggles with your children. Motherhood, real, involved, and intentional motherhood, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/28\/motherhood-is-completely-at-odds-with-a-career-obsessed-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">does not square<\/a> with the modern vision of women-filled workplaces and jobs that require 24\/7 attention.<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt recognized this which is exactly why she chose to leave her position when she did. A spitfire press secretary is replaceable, Nicholas and Viviana Leavitt\u2019s mama is not. <\/p>\n<p>Understanding that kind of dynamic prioritization requires more effort than the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >singular \u201cgirl boss\u201d identity label proffered<\/a> by the pink hat-wearing fourth wave. Which is exactly why Jones doesn\u2019t bother trying to comprehend it, much less sympathize with it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she laments the fact that \u201cmen are men and women are women\u201d and \u201cwe have different desires and different roles to play.\u201d Jones\u2019 magnum opus comes in her last few sentences, when she claims that if a woman \u201cbelieves she can\u2019t have anything because she can\u2019t have it all, a little authority might sound preferable to complete dispossession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe walks into a trap, locks it shut, and tells her sisters and daughters to do exactly the same,\u201d Jones concludes. <\/p>\n<p>This description is not only demeaning, but it\u2019s also detached from reality. If anything traps women, it\u2019s a full-time job with a company that would prefer to pay for their <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/19\/u-s-corporations-love-abortion-tourism-because-it-means-they-dont-have-to-pay-for-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abortions<\/a> instead of give them <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/28\/companies-eager-to-subsidize-abortion-because-they-think-only-childless-women-are-profitable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maternity leave<\/a>. If anyone treats women and young mothers as disposable, it\u2019s certainly not the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emlwaters\/status\/1993355474352165092?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conservative organizations<\/a>, including The Federalist, that give them the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/10\/working-moms-shouldnt-have-to-choose-between-girl-boss-or-tradwife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flexibility<\/a> they need to be <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/03\/11\/new-moms-dont-need-day-care-need-flexible-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">present wives and mothers<\/a> and exercise their talents.
