A 46-year-old man’s body was recovered near Crystal Rapids, and efforts are ongoing to locate missing hikers following the flooding. The flood, triggered by sudden heavy rainfall in Bright angel Creek, resulted in debris flows, landslides, and the destruction of footbridges, substantially impacting the park’s infrastructure, including the main water pipeline that supplies water to residents and visitors. This has led to the suspension of overnight stays at park lodges and hotels to conserve the limited potable water supply. The flooding also prompted the rescue of over 60 people, and authorities are seeking information about other hikers and campers who may be missing. The incident highlights the dangers of monsoon-related flash floods in the area, which can occur rapidly despite clear skies beforehand. Recovery and reconstruction efforts are complex by the extensive damage to the pipeline, which is undergoing a multiyear upgrade. The weather forecast indicates ongoing chances of rain and thunderstorms in the region.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.
