hypothetical 2028 presidential primary, a source familiar with the former president\u2019s thinking told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that he has \u201cmade clear\u201d he would prefer to \u201ctransition from player to coach\u201d to help the \u201cnext generation of Democrats\u201d who are standing up to lead the party and the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source cited Obama\u2019s endorsements of Texas Democratic Senate and gubernatorial nominees, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/james-talarico\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"17710\">James Talarico<\/a> and Gina Hinojosa, in addition to Iowa Democratic Senate nominee Josh Turek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe see that support in many forms:\u00a0headlining fundraisers, visiting an Austin taqueria with James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa, shooting hoops with Josh Turek, and\u00a0providing private counsel to\u00a0candidates seeking his advice,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, Obama has been heavily involved in Democratic campaign operations this cycle. In 2025, he cut TV ads for Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, as well as California\u2019s redistricting referendum. He starred in a similar ad for Virginia\u2019s failed redistricting effort earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite concerns related to Democrats\u2019 possible overreliance on Obama, party strategists, including Mike Nellis and Mike Lux, welcomed the former president\u2019s return to the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s one of the last few politicians with a positive approval rating throughout the country,\u201d Nellis told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cMost people are missing him, especially now with Trump\u2019s approval rating being so low.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nellis argued Obama is \u201cgoing to be an asset on the campaign trail, and people are going to be happy to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a net positive for everybody except Donald Trump,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lux, the other strategist, agreed, asking why Democrats would not use Obama on the campaign trail, considering the former president\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simultaneously, another Democratic strategist, Garry South, implored Obama to do more, contending \u201cDemocrats have been frustrated and a little ticked off that Obama, as our only former president who is in good physical shape and still highly regarded, has not taken a more active and aggressive role in countering Trump II and his destruction and pillaging of America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe times don\u2019t call for an aloof, above-the-fray senior statesman right now, the circumstances demand a fighter who will take on Trump and Trumpism,\u201d South told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South then alluded to Obama opening his presidential library in Chicago in June with a star-studded ceremony.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" the former president \u201ccertainly understands the stakes of these midterms and will be doing all he can to help elect\u00a0Democrats in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A poll conducted by CNN and SSRS in June reported that Obama was perceived positively by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/28271811\/cnn-poll-on-presidents.pdf\">57% of the public<\/a> compared with 34% sharing the opinion of Trump and 30% for former President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former President Bill Clinton, the only other living Democratic one-time commander in chief, had a 38% favorability rating in the poll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obama\u2019s fundraiser on Monday also coincides with Vice President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jd-vance\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"7658\">JD Vance\u2019s<\/a> first public 2026 election season campaign rally for Trump\u2019s super PAC MAGA Inc. that afternoon in\u00a0Sterling\u00a0Heights, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"655\">Michigan<\/a>, in support of the state\u2019s Republican nominees for Senate\u00a0and governor, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-rogers\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1022\">Mike Rogers<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-james\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"5495\">John James<\/a>, in addition to its 10th Congressional District, Mike Bouchard Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Trump and his political advisers did gain an advantage for Republicans with the congressional map post-redistricting, the president and his aides, including former top <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"8767\">White House<\/a> political aide\u00a0James Blair, have been criticized for not spending some of the $400 million cash on hand that MAGA Inc. disclosed at the end of June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MAGA Inc.\u2019s cash on hand complements the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-committee\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"2059\">Republican National Committee\u2019s<\/a> cash edge over the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/dnc\/\"
