The disaster chiefly affected Nepal, where 517 foreigners and numerous locals-tourists, security personnel, and villagers-are unaccounted for. In China, notably Gyirong County in Tibet, 558 people are missing, among them 260 foreigners. India and several other countries also report missing nationals. The flooding is attributed to glacial melting in the Himalayas, which caused torrents that destroyed infrastructure-bridges, roads-and displaced about 1,200 people. In Gyirong County in Tibet, 558 people were reported missing, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. Of those, 260 were foreigners.
