Smith returned to the home Sunday and opened fire, according to Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among those killed, the <em>Associated Press<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/billings-montana-family-killed-house-burned-e977fa5e9cd635eea4e111ad8b2c79ff\">reported<\/a>. Officers heard additional shots after arriving and saw smoke coming from the residence. The home was engulfed in flames minutes later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charlotte Ghekiere, the suspect\u2019s 12-year-old niece and one of the victims, had called 911 from inside the house as the shooting unfolded, according to family members. Her father, Adam Ghekiere, was working at the time and went to the home after hearing reports of an active shooting over a dispatch radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police found Smith outside the home appearing to suffer from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Firefighters initially had to wait for law enforcement to secure the area before approaching the home. The subdivision sits outside Billings city limits and was not required to have fire hydrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police have described the shooting as stemming from a family disturbance and said there was no broader threat to the public, according to multiple reports.
