That stunning sum is akin to awarding a Golden Globe to an actress who publicly credits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/39755\/the-irony-of-michelle-williamss-pro-abortion-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killing her offspring<\/a> with advancing her career.<\/p>\n<p>Was Clancy pro-abortion? Maybe she was. Maybe she wasn\u2019t. Either way, the more revealing question isn\u2019t what Clancy believed about abortion; it\u2019s what the women rallying around her believe about when it\u2019s morally acceptable to take innocent life. Thus, scarier than the woman in the courtroom, sitting in a wheelchair and staring blankly into space, are the hordes of women who may be finding solace and justification for the intentional ending of innocent human life somewhere else in the life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Is invoking Clancy\u2019s mental illness to mitigate responsibility for her actions fundamentally different from <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2026\/08\/massachusetts-abortion-law-no-limit-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invoking \u201chealth care\u201d<\/a> to justify abortion because a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >woman believes giving birth<\/a> would cause her undue stress or derail her professional life? Abortion supporters can cite \u201creproductive freedom\u201d all they want. That\u2019s how it starts. The methodical murder of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/chart\/a-look-at-the-changing-number-of-legal-abortions-in-the-u-s-since-the-1970s\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">65 million<\/a> unborn human beings since <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> is nothing more than permissible slaughter. But more important than which euphemisms we use for abortion and filicide is the message being sent to women who may come to believe that their overwhelming circumstances justify disposing of the unborn.<\/p>\n<p>Under this moral framework, the prohibition is no longer simply, \u201cIt is wrong to intentionally end an innocent human life.\u201d It has become, \u201cIt is wrong \u2014 unless circumstances make it permissible.\u201d Even research on homicidal violence has identified this moral threshold: Many people condemn homicidal violence in principle, while <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10697279\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">identifying<\/a> circumstances where they find it permissible. This concept applies to the Clancy case, where her female supporters appear to argue that even the irreversible decision to strangle three children is defensible based on circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>For those who wonder, \u201cHow could the Nazis have killed 6 million Jews?\u201d the answer becomes clearer when we see women rallying around a person who, one after another, wrapped colorful resistance bands around three children\u2019s throats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/science\/strangulation-deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">applied sustained pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.tv\/news\/nation-world\/testimony-in-lindsay-clancy-murder-case-continues-after-family-takes-the-stand-young-children-victims-family-testimony-aug-18-2026?teaserSource=trending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compressed the structures<\/a> in their necks until they died, and then moved on to the next child. <\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the verdict, the Clancy case is tragic.\u00a0According to the defense presented on Clancy\u2019s behalf, she committed the inconceivable while in the grip of a deeply disordered mind. But even there, another \u201cwho decides?\u201d emerges: Who determines when a disordered mind is sufficiently disordered to excuse criminal responsibility?<\/p>\n<p>This tragedy may be unique, but the permission it helps establish elsewhere is unlikely to be narrow. This is especially true as the West becomes increasingly inclined to exploit heartbreak, using so-called \u201cempathy\u201d for exceptional circumstances to excuse the unthinkable elsewhere. When sympathy for the person who commits evil eclipses compassion for the vulnerable victim, compassion becomes morally inverted.  <\/p>\n<p>Whatever conclusion the jury reaches about Clancy\u2019s psychiatric condition and criminal responsibility, the rationalization of methodically killing three helpless children represents a profound disordering of moral judgment. That is precisely why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hli.org\/resources\/leroy-carhart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LeRoy Carhart<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/kermit-gosnell-philadelphia-abortion-doctor-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kermit Gosnell,<\/a> and the dehumanizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/war\/articles\/nuremberg-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Third Reich<\/a> are relevant here. Their circumstances and methods were different, yet the question remains the same: What happens when circumstances become the rationale for defending the unthinkable?<\/p>\n<p>The danger of that slippery slope is that atrocities such as murder do not require all of society to kill. They require individual perpetrators, certainly. But they can also be enabled by ordinary people who accept, rationalize, defend, or grow indifferent to the circumstances that dehumanize and endanger certain lives. <\/p>\n<p>Case in point: the formal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theholocaustexplained.org\/national-socialist-womens-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women\u2019s wing of the Nazi Party<\/a>, the\u00a0National Socialist Women\u2019s League. Another example is the \u201cLuigi Girls\u201d who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/25\/luigi-mangione-fans-press-passes-new-york-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rallied around Luigi Mangione<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cqjxkqppz5ko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">man who admitted to shooting<\/a> and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. For some of Mangione\u2019s supporters, hatred of corporate America and the health insurance industry is enough to turn a cold-blooded killer into a folk hero. <\/p>\n<p>Different women, perhaps. Different victims, for sure. Certainly different circumstances. But there is that \u201cunless\u201d again. Murder is wrong \u2014 <em>unless<\/em> the victim is someone or something you despise. Murdering your children is wrong \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox29.com\/news\/lindsay-clancy-trial-deliberately-killed-3-children-prosecutor-tells-jury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>unless<\/em> mental illness<\/a> sufficiently mitigates responsibility. Murdering the unborn is wrong \u2014 <em>unless<\/em> a woman believes her circumstances justify it.<\/p>\n<p>The sad state of affairs in our world is that, like Clancy\u2019s three children, the vulnerable, both inside and outside the womb, have no voice in deciding whether the circumstances invoked to justify ending their lives are sufficient. <\/p>\n<p>Circumstances change. The people deciding change. Justifications multiply. How long before the same reasoning is applied to people whose existence is deemed psychologically distressing to others?
