Senators like Chris Van Hollen and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with Governor Gavin Newsom, have publicly stated that they do not oppose or are willing to accept support from socialists, emphasizing the importance of a broad, inclusive “big tent” approach. Van Hollen acknowledged that some DSA positions go too far for him but still sees socialists as part of the party debate. Newsom has actively engaged with socialist figures and advocates for including socialists in the party to expand its base. Ocasio-Cortez,a prominent supporter of socialist candidates and ideas,is viewed as a likely beneficiary of DSA support if she runs in 2028,with some leaders considering her the prime candidate to unite different political strands within the party.

despite some historical skepticism, the DSA is expanding its influence, with figures like Kamala Harris seeking socialist support ahead of her potential presidential run. Harris has endorsed progressive candidates supported by the DSA and has maintained outreach to socialist figures. Simultaneously occurring, others like Jon Ossoff have maintained a cautious stance, endorsing socialist candidates privately while avoiding explicit factional alignment. the integration of socialist-leaning politicians into the Democratic Party signifies a important shift towards a more diverse ideological spectrum ahead of future elections.

Multiple Democrats seen as possible presidential candidates in 2028 have signaled openness to an endorsement from the country’s leading socialist organization, marking the left wing’s growing influence over the Democratic Party.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said on Sunday that while he “certainly isn’t seeking” an endorsement from the Democratic Socialists of America, he also wouldn’t reject the DSA’s backing.
