Containment is now at 27%, with no new growth of the fire, which has burned approximately 23 square miles as Sunday. The fire, known as the Hawk Fire, started Saturday and is attributed to human activity. Over 63,000 residents have been evacuated, and schools remain closed to facilitate emergency efforts. The fire spread rapidly through the Nevada foothills, prompting emergency declarations and the deployment of the National Guard. Despite calmer winds, fire officials are concerned about potential gusts reigniting the flames amid dry conditions, high temperatures, and low humidity. The fire has caused injuries to responders and civilians, and continues to threaten homes and communities. One resident, Crystal Hallock, lost her home for the second time in a decade. The region remains at high risk for wildfires due to persistent dry weather and strong winds, contributing to a nationwide increase in wildfire activity this summer.

RENO, Nevada (AP) — Crews have started to contain a wildfire in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Reno, Nevada, that destroyed more than 30 homes as it spread perilously close to dense neighborhoods, officials said Monday.

Containment reached 27% and there was no new growth of the Hawk Fire, which has held steady at about 23 square miles (60 square kilometers) since it burned out of control on Sunday, authorities said at an afternoon news briefing.

Recommended Stories

Firefighters make progress against a Nevada wildfire that’s destroyed more than 30 homes

Mike Lindell accuses Minnesota of ‘bait and switch’ in recount efforts

US military kills two in ‘lethal kinetic strike’ in Pacific Ocean

“We are making progress,” said U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Matt Zumstein.

The number of residents under evacuation orders and warnings was reduced to about 63,000, down from more than 90,000 people when the blaze mushroomed over the weekend.
