The weekend\u2019s juxtaposition of cultures brought visitors to the capital for a historic race, and brought IndyCar racing into the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic for the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/02\/03\/freedom-250-to-bring-indycar-racing-to-d-c-streets-for-americas-birthday-bash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first time since 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the city discovered what residents realized long ago: Washington is <em>gorgeous<\/em>. Yes, taxes and government intrusion <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/07\/03\/dc-passes-law-requiring-people-buy-health-insurance-property-seized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are too high<\/a>, and the city government <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/12\/why-is-congress-letting-incompetent-bureaucrats-bully-americans-into-paying-taxes-they-dont-owe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doesn\u2019t always work well<\/a> (a problem that could well <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/06\/17\/DC-mayor-race-Janeese-Lewis-George-DSA-democratic-socialists-midterm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">get worse next year<\/a>). But Pierre Charles L\u2019Enfant came up with an amazing vision for a capital city, and planners and administrations of all stripes have nurtured his design over the decades, creating a tribute to democracy that guests from all nations can and should admire.<\/p>\n<p>Washingtonians got to discover a form of motorsports that brings intense action to fans, including in urban environments. In a press availability on Friday, eventual race winner Kyle Kirkwood said that he \u201chope[d] that [fans] fall in love with IndyCar,\u201d which he called the best racing in the world. The series has much to commend it: a quality racing product, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/27\/indycar-bucks-the-system-of-endless-sports-streaming-with-one-broadcast-option\/\">easy access via network television<\/a>, more affordable tickets than <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/11\/14\/why-formula-ones-las-vegas-gamble-could-go-bust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Formula One<\/a>, along with accessible and approachable drivers, and a marquee event that, for this (slightly biased) observer\u2019s money, is not just \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com\/news-multimedia\/news\/2020\/05\/01\/origins-of-the-greatest-spectacle-in-racing-indy-500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the greatest spectacle in racing<\/a>,\u201d but <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/05\/26\/many-americans-love-indy-500\/\">in all of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/05\/26\/many-americans-love-indy-500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/05\/26\/many-americans-love-indy-500\/\">ports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As both a longtime Washingtonian and a longtime race fan, the weekend took on added meaning. While others celebrated racing in Washington, I celebrated racing in my <em>home<\/em>. The thrill of having my favorite sport within walking distance of my house was coupled with the way it made me see my hometown in a whole different light. On one level, I spent this weekend like many others, exploring museums and the National Mall \u2014 except this time, race cars were whizzing by at more than 170 miles per hour. Nothing had changed \u2014 and yet everything had changed.<\/p>\n<p>And in many respects, that\u2019s what this semiquincentennial summer is about \u2014 a chance to look at old things with new eyes and a fresh perspective. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/24\/how-to-make-sure-americas-250th-birthday-goes-out-with-a-bang-not-a-shrug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nation\u2019s 250th birthday<\/a> should give us an opportunity to celebrate, yes, but also to learn of our nation\u2019s history, understand more deeply its founding principles, and recommit ourselves to the \u201cnew birth of freedom\u201d Lincoln spoke of at Gettysburg.
