They argue that the discounted pricing system would reduce competition and threaten their livelihoods. The multicultural Business Coalition, representing diverse immigrant-owned businesses, challenges Mamdani’s proposal on antitrust and predatory pricing grounds, claiming it could put many small stores out of business and comparing the initiative to allowing Walmart into the city, which is currently not present due to fears it would harm small businesses. The coalition emphasizes its ancient roots in supporting immigrant and minority store owners and criticizes the use of taxpayer funds for the initiative, which includes plans to open stores in the Bronx and East Harlem offering staples at 30% discounts. The coalition was formed in opposition to Mamdani’s socialist-style grocery plan, which aims to save residents money but faces strong resistance from local business groups and political figures.Despite offers to meet and resolve concerns, the coalition continues to pursue legal action to prevent the stores’ opening.

A coalition of small supermarket operators and bodega owners on Monday sued to block New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s government-run grocery stores, citing concerns that the discounted pricing system would reduce competition and harm their livelihoods.

The Multicultural Business Coalition filed lawsuits in the New York County Supreme Court challenging Mamdani on antitrust and predatory pricing grounds.
