They expressed concern over the current bureau\u2019s reliance on methods like differential privacy and statistical adjustments, which they believe undermine the integrity and public trust in census data. The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >lawmakers criticized previous practices<\/a> that led to undercounting or overcounting certain states, affecting congressional representation, especially pointing to issues related to non-citizens and the citizenship question. They emphasized that the census must focus on counting only U.S. citizens, as mandated by the constitution, to properly allocate political power and resources. The article also notes the political controversy surrounding the citizenship question and the court&#8217;s rejection of its inclusion in the 2020 Census.The lawmakers concluded that a new director should prioritize restoring the census\u2019s constitutional purpose and accuracy to ensure fair representation and governmental trust. After admitted inaccuracies and distortions created by statistical sampling and other schemes like differential privacy that were used in the 2020 Census, we need a bold new Census director who will take the reins post haste to make the necessary changes to the process,\u201d Louisiana Freedom Caucus Chair and Rep. Beryl Amed\u00e9e told The Federalist. \u201cWe must ensure an honest and accurate citizen count in 2030. The clock is ticking.\u201d\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n<p>In a Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statefreedomcaucus.org\/census-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> organized by the State Freedom Caucus Network (SFCN), the growing number of Republican officials urged Trump to appoint a director to the U.S. Census Bureau, which has operated without a Senate-confirmed leader since early 2025. The agency is responsible for taking a census of the American population every 10 years and \u2014 more notably \u2014 decides how many U.S. House seats each state is awarded (known as \u201ccongressional apportionment\u201d). <\/p>\n<p>While detailing the need for an \u201caccurate, reliable count of our nation\u2019s citizens,\u201d the lawmakers expressed concern that the Census Bureau \u201chas drifted from its constitutional mission.\u201d They specifically signaled dissatisfaction with the bureau\u2019s \u201ccontinued reliance on differential privacy, statistical adjustments, and other methodologies that corrupt reported data to distort an actual enumeration of our citizenry,\u201d which they argued \u201chas eroded public trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Census Bureau <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/27\/what-are-the-odds-census-mistakes-overwhelmingly-benefit-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a> a report in 2022 admitting that it undercounted mostly Republican-led states (five of six) and overcounted mostly Democrat-led states (six of eight) in its 2020 census. Put another way, mostly Democrat states were given congressional seats they didn\u2019t deserve, while mostly Republican states were wrongly deprived of seats.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing Trump, the signers of Monday\u2019s letter also expressed worry about the \u201cremoval of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/29\/counting-noncitizens-in-the-census-undermines-american-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">citizenship question<\/a> from the household census form.\u201d They argued that such a policy \u201chas empowered the non-citizen population count to deform congressional apportionment and state and federal redistricting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Federalist Senior Contributor Ben Weingarten previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/29\/counting-noncitizens-in-the-census-undermines-american-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">observed<\/a>, \u201cContinued inclusion of noncitizens in the Census would mean that millions of illegal aliens and temporary visa holders would continue to distort Americans\u2019 political representation by skewing the allocation of House seats and presidential electors, along with the distribution of trillions of dollars in federal funds.\u201d A January 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/thearp.org\/blog\/apportionment\/2030-citizen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forecast<\/a> by the American Redistricting Project estimated that an accurate 2030 apportionment without noncitizens would lead to blue states like California and New York losing House seats and red states like Florida and Tennessee gaining seats. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Constitution calls for an actual enumeration of our citizens; not a misleading tally padded by illegal aliens and skewed by statistical gimmickry,\u201d Missouri Freedom Caucus Chair and Sen. Nick Schroer told The Federalist. \u201cPresident Trump must nominate a Census Bureau director who will restore that constitutional standard and ensure the 2030 Census accurately counts only U.S. citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s efforts to include the citizenship question on the census took center stage during his first administration in the Supreme Court\u2019s 2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2018\/18-966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Commerce v. New York<\/a><\/em>  decision. While the high court found that the federal government possesses the authority to ask the question, a majority of justices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/supreme-court-tosses-citizenship-question-2020-census-forms-victory-democratic-n1014651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> that the administration did not \u201cadequately\u201d explain its move to reinstate the query, which effectively prevented it from being included on the 2020 Census. <\/p>\n<p>The latter ruling was 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the court\u2019s liberal justices in the majority. <\/p>\n<p>The Republican lawmakers concluded their letter by listing several \u201cfoundational elements\u201d they say a new Census director must take into consideration when \u201clay[ing] the groundwork\u201d for the 2030 Census. This includes \u201cRestoring the constitutional focus on an actual enumeration of our citizens instead of social and political engineering\u201d and \u201cPursuing lawful avenues to obtain and publish accurate citizenship data so that legislators, policymakers, courts, and the public have reliable information available for our requisite constitutional and statutory purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. President, your Administration has rightly and consistently emphasized election integrity as a fundamental part of regaining America\u2019s trust in our government.
