These retaliatory measures, targeting industries such as steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics, will come into effect the Tuesday after Labor Day. Carney emphasized that Canada reluctantly took this step to protect its industries and counter US tariffs on goods like motor vehicles, aluminum, and alcohol, which the US had enacted under Section 232 and 338. He criticized the US for breaking earlier agreements and described canada&#8217;s actions as a way to stand up for its workers and businesses. Simultaneously occurring, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the US does not plan to resume talks with Canada and highlighted that both countries are among the few nations-including China-to retaliate against US tariffs. The prime minister said Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs will target the steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics industries. He said the retaliatory tariffs would also apply to the products the U.S. targeted in its Section 232 and 338 tariffs on Canada, which include goods like motor vehicles, aluminum, and alcohol, though Carney did not specify exactly which goods were under the act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanada will match Washington\u2019s new tariffs, dollar for dollar, in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the coming days, we\u2019ll release details of these new tariff measures, measures which will come into force the Tuesday after Labor Day,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With over two weeks until the Canadian retaliatory tariffs will take effect, Carney said the measures come \u201creluctantly,\u201d though he argued he is \u201cconfident\u201d the move is in Canada\u2019s best interest as he is \u201crejecting a bad deal\u201d and \u201cstanding up for Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe take this step reluctantly \u2014 reluctantly because we recognize that some of these measures will raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians,\u201d Carney said. \u201cReluctantly, because we recognize that some U.S. companies and some U.S. states are innocent bystanders in a dispute that they did not want. Reluctantly, because this trade dispute is preventing Canada and America from doing so much good that we could do together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S.-Canada relations have been rocky since President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"4\">Donald Trump<\/a> first introduced North American tariffs in 2025, throwing the U.S.\u2019s long-term relationship with its northern neighbor into flux over trade concerns.
