The injunction, issued earlier by Judge Richard Leon, prevented above-ground progress on the privately funded project, citing lack of congressional approval.The Supreme Court\u2019s order, issued by Chief Justice John Roberts, remains in effect until further action is taken, allowing more time for the full court to consider the Trump management\u2019s request to overturn the injunction. The administration argued that the district court\u2019s ruling was unlawful and that the construction is vital for security, especially given recent threats against President Trump. District Court Senior Judge Richard Leon from earlier this year. That order effectively halted the White House\u2019s above-ground construction on the privately funded ballroom. The Bush 43-appointed Leon argued the project lacked congressional authorization.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-330325938\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A three-judge panel for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals declined (2-1) to lift the injunction earlier this month, which prompted the Trump administration to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/17\/doj-asks-scotus-to-end-blockade-on-white-house-ballroom-construction-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appeal<\/a> to SCOTUS on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief justice\u2019s order will remain in place until the Supreme Court takes further action on the matter. It will presumably provide more time for the full court to consider the administration\u2019s application to stay Leon\u2019s order, which would have taken effect at midnight unless the high court acted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its application to SCOTUS, the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/17\/doj-asks-scotus-to-end-blockade-on-white-house-ballroom-construction-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that Leon\u2019s order is \u201cunlawful\u201d and, if permitted to stand, \u201cwould wrongfully install a single district judge as sole arbiter of what further construction is \u2018strictly necessary\u2019 to protect the safety of the President, his family, staff members, and visitors to the White House, including foreign dignitaries, and presidents and prime ministers of other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Trump has been the target of a growing number of recent assassination attempts, including a heavily armed assassin who breached the security perimeter of the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner; a gunman who opened fire at the west entrance of the White House complex; a conspiracy to deploy drones armed with explosives at the UFC Freedom 250 event; the threat of a missile attack against Air Force One on July 8; a sniper caught in the act by the Secret Service at Trump International Golf Club, Palm Beach County, Florida; and a sniper\u2019s bullet that struck the President\u2019s ear in Butler, Pennsylvania,\u201d the filing reads. \u201cThe updated East Wing complex is absolutely required and should not be enjoined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administration went on to note several \u201cglaring\u201d legal errors with the district court\u2019s ruling.
